Spinnova has developed a new technology, Yarn from wood fibers
Spinnova, Finland’s VTT Technical Research Center, has developed wood fiber yarn technology. which turns wood fibers into yarn without the use of complex chemical processes. The yarn manufacturing method uses 99% less water and 80% less energy than cotton.
However, the amount of wood used annually in Finland is enough to replace the world’s cotton production. This unique technology could revolutionize the textile and forestry industry.
This is because no hazardous chemicals or energy or water-intensive processes are used compared to the viscose manufacturing process used to create rayon fibers. This method was formed by combining the spider web weaving method with paper production. The most suitable raw material in this technology comes from pine. In 2017-2018 this production technology will be scaled to industrial-scale production.
