
Doi Suthep Nature Study Center Chiang Mai University in honour of His Majesty the King, Chiang Mai University was established in 1996 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the King’s accession to the throne with aim to study on nature, ecology, history and art and culture in Doi Suthep. It is another important religious site and tourism spot in Chiang Mai. The center provides education exhibition via multi-media; therefore, it is the first multi-media museum in Thailand, implemented by the idea of unique mini-museum; that is called “Boutique Museum” The interior exhibition can be divided into two parts: the temporary exhibition of which the interesting theme emerges differently every 4 months and the other part is the permanent exhibition initiated in August, 2004 and now completed and ready to welcome all tourists and the public.
The permanent exhibition presents the relations in ecosystem in Doi Suthep involving geology, ecology and including the royal duties of His Majesty the King towards his subjects. The exhibition can be divided into 6 zones. The first zone is on geology and presents animation movies such as the origin of the world and mountains and the origin of Doi Suthep and the demonstration on the severity of earthquakes. Zone 2 is on aquatic ecology and forests and presents the waterfall and forest imitation which give the real sense of visiting the forest in Doi Suthep, including providing information on the cycle of water, forest, specific plants and endangered plants in Doi Suthep as well as toxic vs. non-toxic mushroom game. Moreover, Zone 3 is about animals and insects, showing the evolution of these animals from past to the present via full multimedia and games about animal footprints. Zone 4 is about relation between humans and forests, presenting several aspects of relationship between people and forests at Doi Suthep such as ways of living, customs and traditions, wisdom, and amusements. Next, Zone 5 is a recurring exhibition, providing novel knowledge or new topics on geology, nature study, history and art and culture at Doi Suthep. The theme will be changed throughout the year. Finally, Zone 6 is about His Majesty the King and highland development, showing the royal duties and his prominent projects such as The Royal Project providing aid for Thai hill tribes.
The center is responsible for public relations and participations such as Music in the Garden, youth camps, paintings contests, mini-marathon competitions etc. These activities are considered creative for the public in Chiang Mai and its neighborhood.
