Origin of Irish Name

The country name of Ireland, formerly a source of controversy between the United Kingdom and Ireland. These concerns arise because part of Ireland belongs to the United Kingdom, making the name Ireland an inappropriate name in the United Kingdom.

In 1989, the Supreme Court of Ireland held that the Irish authorities should not force other countries to use Ireland as the official name. The Court held that, “If it is correct that the courts of other countries seeking assistance for this country are unwilling to uphold the constitution of this country, then, in my opinion, the internationally recognized name, the right of accreditation, goes back to those countries until they have amended it. ”

After tensions ended, an agreement was adopted on Good Friday in 1998, the agreement resolved issues related to Northern Ireland, and Ireland declared its claim to renounce jurisdiction over the island of Ireland. The United Kingdom then accepted an international agreement to use the Irish state name “Ireland” and the Dublin government to use that name.

Republic of Ireland is used in conjunction with Ireland, which is often used to describe the Republic of Ireland. Irish Republic, on the other hand, was the name unilaterally proclaimed by the Republic in 1919. During the independence period, it was also often used internationally, especially in the British press.

In 1937, Ireland declared the establishment of a republic and became independent. But it still remained in the Commonwealth of Nations. It seceded from the Commonwealth on December 21, 1948, and became a permanent neutral country through the constitution. On April 18, 1949, the United Kingdom recognized the independence of Ireland.

Ireland is a highly developed capitalist country. It is also a member of the European Union, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations. And it is also one of the countries with the fastest economic development in the world, and has won the reputation of “European Tiger” because of its developed economy.

On June 17, 2020 local time, the United Nations General Assembly held a vote to elect Ireland as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for 2021-2022.
