Origin of Irish Name

The country name of Ireland, formerly a source of controversy between the United Kingdom and Ireland. These concerns arise because part of Ireland belongs to the United Kingdom, making the name Ireland an inappropriate name in the United Kingdom.

In 1989, the Supreme Court of Ireland held that the Irish authorities should not force other countries to use Ireland as the official name.
