Aberystwyth University — General Information

Aberystwyth University (pronounced Aber—wrist—with) was founded in 1872 and is the first university in Wales. It is located on the west coast of Wales and currently has over 14,000 students, of whom over 2,000 are international students.

Aberystwyth University is the only university in the UK to offer a year-long work placement as part of its curriculum, leading to a high rate of employment when students graduate.

Aberystwyth has one of the largest concentrations of international studies courses, with over 150 masters and doctoral degrees. The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) is a world-class research and education centre, working with Bangor University to study sustainable land use, climate change and the security of food and water supplies. The National Library of Wales is located next door and is also a centre for the arts in Wales.

Aberystwyth has over 170 clubs and societies, and a sports centre for students, thanks to its close proximity to the sea. The university has a wide range of water sports activities for students, and the coastline is also EU Blue Flag-free. Aberystwyth University’s Student Union offers a variety of activities, restaurants and shops. The university also has its own radio station and alumni associations around the world.

The University’s main campus is situated on Penglais Hill, a hill with stunning views across the city and Cardigan Bay. The campus is home to 12 of the University’s 17 departments and faculties, as well as halls of residence. Another original Aberystwyth building, the ‘Old College’, houses the Registrar’s Office and the Departments of Welsh and Education.

Aberystwyth is a seaside town, bordering Cardigan Bay. Students can enjoy the beach and enjoy water sports such as surfing and sailing.

The town centre is less than 1km away, so students can easily travel into the city centre. There are many shops, including banks, post office, medical services, dentists, ophthalmologists and many other shops.
