Synopsis:

In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, although the emperor had abdicated, the Forbidden City was still a small court of monarchs and ministers. After Rong’er, a commoner, became a palace maid by mistake, she had a relationship with the guard Li Qi, and was favored by Puyi because of her intelligence and liveliness.

Rong’er’s comprehension of cooking skills was highly appreciated by Aunt Shouxi, who took Rong’er in as her apprentice and taught her cooking skills. Eunuch Sun Liren falsely accused Shouxi of stealing the treasures in the palace, and put Shouxi to death. Rong’er was unwilling to accept the unjust death of her master, and investigated the case side by side with Li Qi.

The thief framed Rong’er again, but fortunately Puyi rescued her and saved her life. The two spoke frankly to Puyi, and Sun Liren was executed. When everyone was celebrating Shouxi’s vindication, Feng Yuxiang’s army drove Puyi out of the Forbidden City.

The identity of the eunuch chief Yu Defu, the mastermind behind the scene, surfaced, and his plot to transfer the treasures in the palace to foreign merchants was discovered by Rong’er.

Rong’er and Li Qi joined forces to recover the national treasure and let Yu Defu receive the punishment he deserved. Rong’er left the palace and opened a restaurant, known as the “last chef”.
