Introduction to Socrates

Socrates (Greek: Σωκράτης; English: Socrates; German: Sokrates) (469 BC, 470 BC to 399 BC) was one of the founders of Greek (Athens) philosophy. Western philosophy and the tradition of Western ethical thought as described by the first moral philosophers. He was a mysterious figure with no writings, known mainly through the writings of his later classical writers, notably his pupils Plato and Xenophon.

Other sources include the Aeschines of Antisthenes, Aristippus, and Sphettos of the same period. Aristophanes was a playwright, a leading contemporary writer, who wrote plays referring to Socrates during his lifetime, although the Ion of the Travels of Chios A snippet from Chios’ Travel Journal provides important information about Socrates’ youth.

Plato’s dialogues are one of the most comprehensive accounts of Socrates surviving from antiquity, from which Socrates became known for his contributions to the fields of ethics and epistemology. It is this Platonic Socrates that gives his name to the concept of Socratic irony and the Socratic method or communism. However, the distinction between Socrates in reality and Plato’s portrayal of Socrates in dialogue remains in question.

Socrates had a strong influence on philosophers in later ancient and modern times. Socrates’ descriptions of art, literature, and popular culture made him one of the most widely known figures in the Western philosophical tradition.
