Story 137: Parrot and Relambazar
Author: Anonymous
Once upon a time, there was a woman named Relangbaza who had an affair with other men whenever her husband went out.
Relanbaza fed a parrot, which couldn’t stand the mistress’s behavior. He often told Relanbaza’s scandals in the presence of many guests.
Relangbaza was very angry and ordered his maid Tashi Dolma to take the parrot to a place where others could not see it and kill it quietly.
Tashi Dolma thought: The parrot is not guilty, I cannot kill it. Then he took the parrot to the edge of the Lhasa River and said, “Parrot! Parrot! Fly far away, to your hometown Gongbu Forest! If the hostess Relangbaza knew about it, what would happen to her? I’m not even good for you.” The parrot said “Pull the rope” and flew into the sky. In fact, it did not go far, but flew into the Jokhang Temple and hid behind the hat of the Buddha statue of Sakyamuni.
Although Relangbaza did shady things at night, he still went to the Jokhang Temple to worship Buddha every morning. On this day, the parrot pretended to be the voice of Sakyamuni and said: “Hey! Relangbaza, do you want to go to heaven?” Relangbaza thought that the Buddha had spoken, and he was so happy that he kowtowed and thanked him: “Yes! Think! Even in my dreams.”
“Okay!” said the parrot: “If you really want to go to heaven, you should spend all your property within three days, give half to the servant Tashi Dolma, and one bucket to the beggar on the street, and swear not to take it back again. ”
“Lasuo! Lasuo!” The woman agreed quickly.
“One day today, two days tomorrow, and when the sun rises the day after tomorrow, you wear a shabby Tibetan robe and come here with a stick, and I will help you get to heaven of happiness.”
After hearing what the parrot said, Relang Bazaar was so happy that he would say to everyone he met: “Haha, Sakyamuni is going to save me and go to heaven! Haha! I, Relang Bazaar, am going to paradise!”
On the third day, Relang Bazaar dispersed all his property and happily came to the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. While kowtowing, he said, “Buddha, I did as you asked. Please help me ascend to heaven!”
At this time, the parrot came out from behind the Buddha statue and said loudly: “Bah! A shameless woman like you still wants to go to heaven. Stop dreaming! Take your stick and go to Bajiao Street to beg for food. Parrot I’m going back to the green forest of Gongbu! Ha, ha, ha!”
After saying that, he spread his wings and flew so fast that even his shadow was invisible.
