Deltacron…The Hybrid of Good and Evil

Scientists have officially confirmed that Delta-Omicron recombinant virus has been found in several European countries and the United States. The news still gave us a fright although the “Deltacron” variant with mixtures of genes may not rage as well as their ancestors did and is unlikely to cause a new surge.

Dr. Scott Nguyen, a scientist at the Public Health Laboratory, Washington, D.C., was inspecting GISAID, an international database of coronavirus genomes, and finding each virus in the sample carried a combination of genes from the Delta and Omicron variants. Scientists call such viruses “recombinants” referring to the hybrid mutation that differs from the parent genes and most of which occur naturally. So far, the recombinant virus has been found in 33 samples collected in France, one in the Netherlands and Germany each, and eight in Denmark. Two cases have been identified in the US by Helix, a genetics research company.

The scientific hypothesis indicates that it’s possible for two viruses to invade the same cell at the same time. When that cell starts producing new viruses, the new genetic materials may be mixed up, potentially producing a new, hybrid virus. Despite rarity, people are sometimes infected with two versions of the coronavirus at once. For example, if you go to a crowded place where several people are infected, you might breathe in viruses from more than one of them.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, an infectious disease epidemiologist specializing in emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, who is the COVID-19 technical lead for the WHO, said that recombinants happen all the time because this is what a virus does as seen in a very intense level of circulation of SARS-Cov-2. So far, scientists have not seen any change in severity of the new variant, informally dubbed as “Deltacron.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Etienne Simon-Loriere, a virologist at the Institut Pasteur in France, confirmed that “Deltacron” is yet to be a variant of concern because the recombinant is extremely rare. Although it has existed since at least January, it has not yet shown the ability to grow exponentially.

Its outbreak is not expected to be as raging as the Delta and Omicron variants. The genome of the spike protein comes almost entirely from Omicron while the rest is Delta. So, the defenses that people have acquired against Omicron — through infections, vaccines or both — should work just as well against the new recombinant. However, researchers are conducting experiments to see how the new recombinant performs in dishes of cells and mice which will provide more clues.
