Where is the hometown of Cangjie’s calligraphy creation?

The legend of Cangjie’s creation of Chinese characters is more widely spread throughout the country. “Huainanzi Benjingxun” contains “in the past when Cangjie wrote a book, the sky rained grains, and the ghost cried at night”. The preface to “Shuowen Jiezi” says: “In the history of Cangjie, the Yellow Emperor, seeing the traces of the hooves and claws of birds and beasts, and knowing that the present can be distinguished from each other, he constructed a book contract.”

The legends and relics of the creation of characters can be found in many places in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. Among them, Donger Village in Linfen, which is now Xizhao Village in Yaomiao Town, has a more extensive influence. It is said that since the Han and Tang Dynasties, there has been a Cangjie ancestral hall in the village, called “Cangjie Shrine”, and sacrificial activities are held every spring. There are more than 400 houses in the temple.

There are two sides in the temple. One side is the Chongwen Guild Hall and the other side is the Peiying Yi Village. The township meeting is held here.

In the Qing Dynasty, after the shrine was burned down, three more shrines were built. In the 49th year of Qianlong’s reign (1784), Li Zaorong, the magistrate of Linfen County and Hejian, built a stele pavilion next to the Cangjie Temple. Now the ancestral temple has been destroyed, and the stone tablet is kept in the Yao Temple.

According to local legend, Cangjie was inspired by the stories of hunters following the footprints of tigers, wolves, oxen and sheep to create hieroglyphs. According to the “Pingyang Fuzhi” record: “Ancient Cangjie is the ancient history of the Yellow Emperor. He was born with four eyes and virtues.

Turtle writing, bird feathers, mountains and rivers, the words are created with the palm of your hand, the words are completed, the sky is the rain, the ghosts are crying at night, and the dragon is hidden. Today, there is a monument in Cangjie’s hometown in the south of the city.” This is enough to prove that today’s Xizhao Village or Cangjie’s hometown , or the place where Cangjie made characters.

Cangjie Mausoleum in Nanle

Cangjie Mausoleum is located in Nanle County, Henan Province. It was formerly known as Cangjie Temple. It is located near Wu Village in the northwest of the county. The temple was in ruins, and the tomb of Cangjie was excavated, and a large number of artifacts from the Longshan and Yangshao periods were unearthed.

There are two old steles in Cangjie Temple: one is the remnant of the Yanyou period in the Yuan Dynasty, with the inscription “Cangjie was born in Si and buried in Si, and is the light of the people of the city”; the other old stele is inscribed with Kou Zhun, the famous minister of the Northern Song Dynasty.

The couplet left when worshipping the Cangjie Temple: “Pangus Wendi, the home of the sage who opened the sky”. On the west side of the mausoleum is the Cangjie Temple, which was built in the second year of Yongxing in the Eastern Han Dynasty (154 AD). The large-scale building complex was completely destroyed during the “Cultural Revolution”. On September 25, 2000, the Henan Provincial People’s Government announced it as a provincial key cultural relics protection unit.

Regarding Cangjie’s burial place, there are many records in the history books, “Chan Tong Ji” said that “Cangjie lived in Yangwu, and was buried in the township”. The Ming Dynasty’s “Bianjing Relics” contains: “Cangjie’s tomb was in peace when it was in the north of the city.” In Nanle County, the remnants of the Yanyou period in the Yuan Dynasty bear the inscription “Cangjie was born in Si and buried in Si, and he is the light of Yi people”.

Baishui Cangjie Temple

Cangjie Temple is to commemorate the temple opened by Cangjie, the ancestor of writing. Cangjie was the historian of Xuanyuan Huangdi and the creator of Chinese characters. The cemetery has Cangjie Temple, 35 kilometers northeast of the county seat, and is now a national key cultural relics protection unit. Covering an area of 1.7 hectares, the main body of Cangjie Temple includes the mountain gate, the east and west theaters, the front hall, the newspaper hall, the middle hall, the sleeping hall, the bell and drum tower, and the east and west wing rooms. The sleeping hall built in the Yuan Dynasty uses wormwood as the purlin of the front hall, 16 meters long, 55 cm thick, uniform in diameter and straight, which is rare in the world.

The inner main hall and the rear hall are buildings of the Ming Dynasty. The Bell Tower and Drum Tower were restored during the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. There are 19 ancient murals in the temple, dozens of inscriptions in the past dynasties, more than 40 thousand-year-old ancient cypresses around the temple and tombs, lush and lush, and the trees are very old and strange in shape, which is very rare.

The ancient cypresses in Cangjie Temple are one of the three ancient cypress groups in my country. In terms of age, the ancient cypresses here are comparable to those of the Confucian Temple in Qufu, Shandong Province and the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor, ranking first among the three ancient cypress groups in my country.

Baishui Cangjie Temple has a long history, according to historical records, as early as the Yanxi period of the Eastern Han Dynasty, there was a “move to build a temple”, and it formed a certain scale. Therefore, there is more than 1,800 years of temple history that can be tested in writing, and the history without written records, according to folklore, can be traced back to the era of the Yellow Emperor.
