The key terms used in ship and airplane transportation

People who are just starting out in the import-export business need to meet, talk and prepare more or fewer documents related to transportation. What you’ll need for sure are technical terms, and abbreviations, which, if you translate or understand them in different directions. ARRIVAL NOTICE – A notification that the ship has arrived.

AMENDMENT – change or correction

BAF(BUNKER ADJUSTMENT FACTOR) – costs resulting from higher fuel costs. It is an expense charged by the ship company in addition to the normal freight.

BERTH – Refers to berths or berths.

BILL OF LADING – Bill of Lading

BREAK-BULK CARRIER – An ocean liner used to carry packaged or piece goods such as steel, automobiles.

BULK CARGO – Bulk cargo is cargo that is transported in bulk. without containers Use the method of transportation by pouring cargo into large vessels such as fertilizer, cassava, sugar, coal.

BULK CARRIER – An ocean liner used to carry bulk and liquid cargo.

CAF(CURRENCY ADJUSTMENT FACTOR) – expenses arising from changing currency exchange rates. It is an expense charged by the ship company in addition to the normal freight.

CARRIER’S AGENT – the carrier who issues the bill of lading

CFS (CONTAINER FREIGHT STATION) – packing/delivery station at origin The exporter must deliver the goods to the shipping agent at the shipping agent’s office. The shipping agents will load the goods into the containers themselves. They will be responsible for the goods received from the exporter until the goods arrive at the destination port. The shipping agent collects a container charge (CFS Charge) from the shipper at the destination. The shipping agent delivers the cargo to the importer at the ship agent’s office or service station. The ship agent will charge the container opening fee (CFS Charge) from the importer.

CFS/CFS – B/L, as indicated here, means at the port of origin CFS export at the destination port of CFS import or container opening at the shipping agent’s office. Importers carry goods with trucks.

CFS/CY – B/L, which is specified like this, means that at the port of origin of the CFS type, at the port of destination imported as CY, the importer drags the containers to unload the goods to the importer’s establishment.

CHARGEABLE WEIGHT – The weight of the cargo used to calculate the freight.

CHARTERER – Chartered voyagers without fixed routing and sailing schedules.

CLEAN ON BOARD / CLEAN SHIPPED ON BOARD – This is a term in B/L that generally means that a cargo ship has received its goods on board. The product is in good condition. The word Clean means that the product is in good condition. Therefore, the B/L must not have a Remark or note that the product is in a bad condition.

CO-LOADER – Primary Loading Agent for LCL Transport

COMBINED TRANSPORT BILL OF LADING – Bill of Lading For the transportation of several methods which are under the responsibility of the ship company. such as transported by boat and then to the train to the destination

COMMERCIAL; INVOICE – A confirmation of the list of goods and prices issued by the seller.

CONSIGNEE – consignee : In case of trading by L/C, it will specify according to the conditions in the L/C that TO ORDER or specify the name of the bank that opened the L/C. In case of direct trading without a bank, the name of the consignee will be specified directly

CONSOLIDATION – Gathering or product combination This is usually done by a representative of the purchaser.

CONTAINER AND SEAL NO. – container number and container seal number

CONTAINER CARRIER – An ocean liner used to transport containers.

CONVENTIONAL VESSEL – A traditional ocean liner that carries cargo directly into large vessels.

CY (CONTAINER YARD) – delivery/receiving station containers at origin The exporter must obtain containers from the ship’s representative for self-loading at the exporter’s premises. The exporter will be responsible for the goods in the container until the goods reach the port of destination. The shipping line representative will indicate on the B/L that Shipper loaded and counted, but will not charge the shipper a container charge at the destination. The ship agent will deliver the container to the importer at the ship agent’s office or service station. The ship’s representative will not charge the container opening fee from the importer.

CY/CY – B/L, indicated like this, means that the port of departure is exported as CY at the port of destination that is imported as CY.

DELIVERY ORDER(D/O) – release order

DEMURRAGE CHARGE – The cost of the ship’s time. or the time cost of containers that cannot be removed from the port within the specified time

DESCRIPTION OF GOODS – Product List

DESPATCH MONEY – The money that the ship company pays to the ship’s operator for completing the work before the specified time. Mostly used on chartered traffic boats.

DETENTION – Return of a container that is too late for a specified time.

DIVERSION – Request to change the port of destination of the goods during or before the shipment.

DOC. FEE – Document Fee

DOOR TO DOOR – Delivery of goods from the exporter’s location. and deliver the goods to the importer’s location

ETA (ESTIMATE TIME OF ARRIVAL) – Estimation of the date the ship will reach the port of destination.

ETD (ESTIMATE TIME OF DEPARTURE) – Estimation of the date the ship will leave the port of departure.

FCL (FULL CONTAINER LOAD) – is to load the goods until the container is full. This can be either a CFS and CY import or export.

FEU (FORTY FOOT EQUIPVALENT UNIT) – 40 feet container

FREETIME – Free time

FREIGHT COLLECT /PAYABLE AT DESTINATION – Freight at the destination port

FREIGHT FORWARDER – freight forwarder

FREIGHT PREPAID/FREIGHT PAID – Freight at origin
GENERAL AVERAGE (GA) – Joint adventure responsibility for cargo in the same vessel transported together. In the event that some cargo has to be abandoned for the safety of the ship and the remainder of the cargo on board

GROSS WEIGHT – Gross weight of the product.

HAZARDOUS GOODS – Dangerous Goods
ICD (INLAND CONTAINER DEPOT) – is an ICD container station. which has customs formalities for both imported goods and exported goods, called warehouses for the release of imports and packing of exports transported by containers outside the port area called the inspection and packing station for goods entering the container for export (Sor.

INLAND TRANSIT – INLAND TRANSPORT It will be a transport to bring the goods to the big ship at the port of origin. or delivery of goods from a large ship at the destination port

L/C(LETTER OF CREDIT) – payment via bank

LCL (LESS THAN CONTAINER LOAD) – means the container is not full. This will be a CFS import or export only.

LINER – Vessels with fixed routing and scheduling are mostly container ships.

MANIFEST – Cargo account on board

MARK & NO. – mark and package number of the product

MASTER – Refers to the ship’s captain or shipmaster.

MATE’S RECEIPT – Initial receipt from the ship’s head. as evidence that will be brought to the ship agency to issue a bill of lading

MEASUREMENT/ GROSS WEIGHT – the size of the package and the total weight of the package. Show only the total amount.

MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT DOCUMENT – Multi-coated or multimodal freight receipt. It is a document issued by the carrier in lieu of a bill of lading. In the event that the goods to be transported are transported in many ways For example, transporting from the originating plant by car to an ocean liner and transporting it by rail at the other end of the road, then bringing it up by truck to deliver to the destination, etc.

NVOCC (NON-VESSEL OPERATION COMMON CARRIER) – is a carrier that does not own a vessel or does not own a vessel,
NOTIFY PARTY- consignee or assignee of consignee.

NUMBER OF ORIGINAL – Number of B/L originals, typically 3 cards.

OCP(OVERLAND COMMON POINT) – A delivery facility deep in the land.

PLACE AND DATE OF ISSUED – Place and date of issue of the consignment note.

PLACE OF DELIVERY – The last place to deliver goods to buyers. It may be a warehouse at the destination port. or a buyer’s warehouse / office located in another city or country.

PLACE OF LOADING – Place of origin for export

PLACE OF RECEIPT – Place of original pickup It could be the buyer’s warehouse at the port of origin. or as a port of origin for export

PORT OF DISCHARGE – port of destination / port where cargo is disembarked

PORT OF LOADING – A port of origin for exports

PRE-CARRIER – the name of the small ship that transports goods to the big ship at the port city where the big ship receives the cargo from another small ship.

PROFORMA INVOICE – Product and price invoice issued by buyer.

QUANTITY AND KIND OF PACKAGES – Number and nature or type of packages.

RO-RO CARRIER – A type of ocean liner that carries goods on and off the ship by conveyor. such as a car truck

SURRENDER BILL OF LADING – A bill of lading at the recipient of the bill of lading. Release orders can be obtained at destination without the original consignment note.

SHIPPED ON BOARD – This is a term in B/L that generally means that a merchant ship has received its goods on board.

SHIPPER – Shipper

SHIPPING AGENT / SHIP AGENT – SHIP AGENT

SHIPPING MARKS – Symbols/Marks/Tags

SHIPPING PARTICULAR/ SHIPPING ORDER/ SHIPPING INSTRUCTION – Ship booking form that the exporter must fill in the details by himself so that the shipping agent can bring the details. to prepare a bill of lading for the exporter

SHUOLD BE – Request for amendment of documents and ship accounts

THC(TERMINAL HANDLING CHARGE) – port charges or container camp

TALLY SHEET – Vessel Agent Receipt Document

TEU (TWENTY FOOT EQUIVALENT UNIT) – 20 feet container

THROUGH BILL OF LADING – Bill of Lading For transportation by boat along the route

UN CLASSIFICATION NUMBER – Dangerous Goods Identification Number which is the number and standard of protection internationally

VOCC (VESSEL OPERATING COMMON CARRIER) – an ocean liner owned by the operator.

VESSEL / STEAMER/ CARRIER – name of large ships traveling to the destination port.

VOY.NO. / VOYAGE NO. – Boat trip

Vocabulary used in air transportation

AGENT IATA CODE – IATA Agent Code

AIR WAYBILL – air waybill

AIRPORT OF DEPARTURE – Departure airport

AIRPORT OF DESTINATION – Destination airport

CARRIER – Airline that carries cargo

CHARGEABLE WEIGHT – The weight of the cargo used to calculate the freight.

COMMERCIAL; INVOICE – A confirmation of the list of goods and prices issued by the seller.

DECLARED VALUE FOR CARRIER – price of goods declared to airlines in AWB

DECLARED VALUE FOR CUSTOMS – The price of goods declared to customs in AWB.

DOOR TO DOOR – Delivery of goods from the exporter’s location. and deliver the goods to the importer’s location

ETA (ESTIMATE TIME OF ARRIVAL) – Estimation of the date the ship will reach the port of destination.

ETD (ESTIMATE TIME OF DEPARTURE) – Estimation of the date the ship will leave the port of departure.

EXECUTED ON – The date the bill of lading was issued in the AWB.

FLIGHT/DATE – flight and departure date

FREETIME – Free time

GROSS WEIGHT – Gross weight of the product.

HAZARDOUS GOODS – Dangerous Goods

HOUSE AIR WAYBILL – Air waybill issued by Air Freight Forwarder.

IATA CARGO AGENT – Certified Air Cargo Agent by the Air Cargo Association.

MASTER AIR WAYBILL – Air waybill issued by the airline.

NVOCC (NON-VESSEL OPERATION COMMON CARRIER) – is a carrier that does not own a ship or does not own a vessel.

NOTIFY PARTY – Consignee or assignee of goods from Consignee

PACKING LIST – A list of packages (packing, weight, quantity) issued by the seller.

PLACE AND DATE OF ISSUED – Place and date of issue of the consignment note.

PROFORMA INVOICE – Product and price invoice issued by buyer.

RATE CLASS – Air freight rate

REQUESTED ROUTING – preferred air route

SHIPPER – a person or company that sends or transports goods by sea, land, or air.
