Biography
Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was the most important and influential painter of the Rococo period in France in the 18th century. He painted a lot of comedy, but also invented a strong philosophical love, and they are all set against the background.
Huaduo was born on October 10, 1684 in Valenciennes, which was originally Flanders on the border of Fabius. He was the son of a rural handicraftsman who made a living by burning bricks and kilns. He arrived in Paris in 1702, initially as an apprentice in a painting shop, copying some of the best-selling Italian and Dutch classics for uninterested employers. Later, as an assistant in the studio of stage artist Claude Gillot (1673-1722), he developed a strong interest in theatre.
In 1708, Huaduo studied under the decorative painter Claude Auderan III (1658-1734), and carefully studied the color skills of the 17th-century Baroque painting master Rubens, who was deeply impressed by Rubens.
He and other 17th-century Dutch painters brought his art into a new era. In 1709, he participated for the first time in the “Rome Prize” painting competition held by the Royal Academy, but was not selected.
This made him angry and returned to his hometown to work hard. In 1710, he returned to Paris again and completed his most important work, “The Ship Isle of Cité” in two years. In this two-meter-wide oil painting, he depicted the island of love in French and Italian folklore as a place that is illusory and unreachable.
In 1712 he was admitted as a trainee at the French Academy of Fine Arts. He also painted many Italian comedies, fully exploring the connotations of some famous characters. From 1710 to 1717, he successively painted three works with the same title of “The Ship of the Island of Citadel”.
For nearly 10 years, Hua Tuo has been working hard to sell paintings. Most of the themes are the romantic life of actors and children. The colors are soft and the image is flattering, which is called “Fragrant Body”. As a result of overwork, his health was greatly damaged, and he finally suffered from lung disease.
In 1719, Hua Duo went to London to seek medical treatment, and as prescribed by the doctor, he went to Italy for recuperation, and returned to Paris in 1720. At the request of Gersaint (1695-1750), the dealer and collector who sold his works, he completed his last masterpiece “The Painting Shop of Gersaint” in 8 days. The painting is 163cm high and 308cm wide, which vividly reproduces the appearance of the Parisian painting shop in the 18th century and the scene of the nobles buying paintings.
The painting “Hunter’s Journey” is also a mature work of Huaduo’s late period. It shows the scene of a group of young noble men and women playing on the grass in the forest, and the composition is quite similar to that of “Boat on the Isle of Sidney”.
This practice of using trees to form a stage-like scene, and arranging figures in a row on a table-like foreground, and leaving a bright sky in the background, has been repeated in many of Watteau’s works. However, it is undeniable that Hua Tuo does have a remarkable skill in expressing trees, costumes and graceful gestures.
On July 18, 1721, Huaduo finally suffered from a recurrence of lung disease and hemoptysis. He died in his studio in Nogent-sur-Mass, only 37 years old. He left behind a large collection of sketches, sketches and sketches, a very valuable asset.
In these sketches, he brilliantly captures the instantaneous movements and expressions of the characters: the sneaky glances, the gestures of graceful gestures, the nonchalant gestures, the dancing gestures, the pretentious salutes… all kinds of fleeting vividness The forms are captured and reproduced by the artist’s keen eyes and skilled skills.
These precious albums called “Images with Various Poses” are new milestones never reached by previous masters in the history of sketch art, and have a great influence on the sketching skills of later Impressionist painters.
Huaduo’s representative works include “The Garden of Love”, “The Wayward Woman”, “Italian Comedian”, “Gelsen’s Painting Shop”, “The Island of Citadel” and so on.
