Creativity with Inventors

When it comes to inventors Many people think of Thomas Alva Edison (Thomas Alva Edison), the most prolific inventor of that era (1847 – 1931), he patented more than 1,000 inventions by Most of these inventions are not inventions that he invented himself. It is a development of original inventions and imitations of ideas from others. In which Atison, besides being an inventor, he was also a businessman. His best-known work is the invention of the incandescent bulb that we have today.

Becoming an inventor or innovator is not easy. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do it. self development Practicing to be a creative person to bring new ideas can help us be innovative thinkers. As Thomas Alva Edison said,

” Genius is one percent inspiration, and ninety-nine percent perspiration.”

This means that genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perseverance or sweat of effort.

Creativity is an important factor in the development of new things or the improvement of existing ones to be more effective. Edward de Bono, who is famous for his theory called the hat Six Thinking Hats: “There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns.” This means that the most important resource of human beings is creativity. We wouldn’t develop anything new and we’d always do the same thing.

The importance of creativity is widely discussed nowadays, even in an article by the Partnership for 21th Century Skills. Identified as one of the key Learning and Innovation Skills, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. in modern times

There are many meanings of the word creativity, for example, Kriengsak Charoenwongsak (2002) gave the meaning that creativity It is the creation of new things (Creative thinking) to expand the boundaries of thinking from the existing framework to new ideas that have never been before in order to find the best answers to the problems that arise.

While the Office of Academic and Educational Standards Ministry of Education (2008) has defined that creativity It is the ability of the human brain to think in many aspects. Many directions lead to the invention of new objects and solutions.

Overall, creativity is about thinking for the development of new things or for the development of existing ones. It is also a matter of thinking to solve problems. Creativity must be based on the possibility (workable), not just fantasies and must be appropriate. (appropriate) Even though it is novel, there must be an element of rationality and value under which it is generally accepted. The characteristics of creativity can be divided into 4 characteristics together (Torrance, 1979):

Originality is the nature of new ideas. different from the original idea applied to create new things that are unique to the original
Fluency is the ability to come up with answers fluently. Fast and large quantity in a limited time.

Flexibility is the ability to come up with many types of answers and many directions, adapt from one thing to many things, thoughtfulness Elaboration is an idea in detail to embellish or expand on a main idea.

The creation of creativity may be divided into 2 main approaches:

The first approach: originated from imagination and then analytically thought to study the possibility. Human imagination is very important as the beginning of the birth of new things, most often starting from problems or human needs. Thus causing us to think of new things, however, that imagination and dreams may not always come true. Therefore, it is necessary to consider carefully and experiment or create it.

The second approach: arises from the extension of existing ideas. This kind of creativity happens often. Because people’s ideas often start with prior experience and knowledge. Allows us to think further or develop and improve the original things for the better. Sometimes we may get ideas from other people to develop something new or connect with the existing ones. It is this kind of thinking that Thomas Edison, who is known as the inventor, used in many of his various inventions. Until sometimes people say that in fact Edison is a copycat.

That’s good. Edison’s idea, however, was not entirely plagiarism. But it is the development of other people’s ideas to bring inventions for use and commercialization. There are many studies trying to study situations that cause people to be creative in developing new things or obtaining words. For example, a research paper titled The cognitive neuroscience of creativity (Arne, 2004) summarizes the situations that lead to creativity as illustrated.

Dietrich explained that creativity can occur in four situations: learning and effort. This is cognitive-deliberate, an example of which can be seen in Thomas’ trying and learning. Edison, in his many trials and errors, relentlessly. second situation It’s a matter of learning and coincidence.

An example of this situation is Isaac Newton, who was a learner and by chance encountering a fallen apple made him come up with the reasoning that led to the law of gravity. gravity of the world Third scenario It’s a matter of emotion and effort. An example of this situation is the emergence of Archimedes’ new knowledge. who relentlessly contemplated how to measure the weight of gold.

Until he came to relax by taking a bath and thought about replacing the water of the object itself. and the fourth situation is emotion and coincidence (emotion-spontaneous), which describes situations and environments that make people creative as well as part of the content said that the creation of human creativity often comes from the extension of ideas from exchanging ideas from people with different knowledge backgrounds. Causing new ideas and also mentions the creativity of scientists that Commitment to a laboratory is not the way scientists come up with new ideas.

But it arises from attending academic conferences and presenting works for the exchange of knowledge separately. So it can be said that meeting people and exchanging ideas. It’s a critical situation for new ideas to emerge, and it’s for this reason that Johnson finds coffee shops to be the place to bring innovation, as people often come to meet and chat in a relaxed atmosphere. Bring creativity to further develop the original idea itself.
