Apple Cider Vinegar: The Cure-All Elixir

It is believed that apple cider vinegar shares the same medical benefits as a cure-all elixir, for example, promoting weight loss and lowering blood sugar levels. However, improper use of or too much apple cider vinegar may cause unwanted effects.
As apple cider vinegar contains “acetic” acid – a highly concentrated acid, excessive use without dilution may harm a digestive system, hence increase the risk of osteoporosis, tooth decay, esophagitis, and infectious dermatitis. A study on influence of the tolerability of vinegar as an oral source of short-chain fatty acids on appetite control and food intake by Dr. Julia Darzi, a nutritionist the University of Surrey, UK, suggests that while taking apple cider vinegar with meals suppresses appetite and leaves you feeling fuller for longer, nausea can also be expected. For people with gastrointestinal issues, having pure apple cider vinegar can make symptoms worse with stomach ulcers and acid reflux.
A report from Dr. Karl Lhotta, Chief Physician at the Department of Internal Medicine, Vorarlberg Hospital, Austria, shows that excessive consumption of apple cider vinegar lowers potassium levels in the blood although there is no specific study for this particular finding. One case study patient was a 28-year-old woman who had consumed 250 ml of apple cider vinegar diluted in water daily for 6 years and who was found with hypokalemia. She was also diagnosed with osteoporosis – a rare disease among young people. The doctor believed that daily consumption of large amount apple cider vinegar caused minerals being leached from the bones to buffer the acidity of her blood. In addition, taking diabetes meditations or diuretics with apple cider vinegar can also have negative effects on potassium levels in the body.
Listed below are how to eat apply cider vinegar beneficially and safely.
- Avoid taking it with meals as it delays stomach emptying. The ideal time is before meals or on an empty stomach.
- 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar per a large glass of water – As it is highly acidity, dilution can prevent tooth decay, esophagitis and stomach irritation.
- Do not leave it on the skin for a long time. This may lead to skin inflammation, especially those with sensitive skin.
- Consult a doctor before eating it if you have diabetes or gastrointestinal diseases. To get the most benefits, it is advisable to consume unfiltered fermented vinegar since it contains a certain substance called Mother – a cloudy sediment lookalike floating in the water, containing proteins, enzymes, and good bacteria that are beneficial to the digestive system.
