Biography of Analuddha, The First Eye of Heaven
1. Carefree childhood
The “Amitabha Sutra” records the names of sixteen great arhats, and there is one Amiruduo, that is the Venerable Analaw.
Anaru, born as a descendant of the royal family, is the cousin of the Buddha. After the Buddha’s father, King Jingfan, passed away, the Mahanan general who succeeded to the throne was the elder brother of Anarud’s direct relative.
Anarud was a naive and lively child in his childhood. He was born smart and agile, and had special talents for music, arts and crafts. When he was seven or eight years old, he could sing loudly in front of everyone, and he could also There are a few sets of gadgets that make people laugh, he is such a cute kid.
As a child, Analud played with palace maids or some royal children all day long. Flowers bloomed in spring, cool in summer, and warm in winter.
When he was seven years old, he always liked to bet with others on winning or losing everything. There were many candies and biscuits in the palace. If he lost the bet, he would give the biscuits to others. Acting like a baby to his mother, sometimes the mother can’t discipline him.
One day, he had lost cookies to others three times. When he asked his mother for cookies for the fourth time, his mother said to him: “There are no more!” , he clamored to ask his mother for the “no more” biscuits, and his mother couldn’t help but show him the empty box, hoping that he would know that there were really no biscuits today. Fortunately, when my mother opened the empty biscuit box, it turned out to be a box full of biscuits. Analu was very happy, he had a box of “no more biscuits”.
After this incident, his mother dared not treat him as an ordinary child. She thought that if he could get what was no longer there, it must be due to his extraordinary background, and there would be great blessings in the future.
Although Anaru is smart, but because he was spoiled and spoiled, when he was fifteen years old, he still knew nothing about the society outside the palace. Once he was playing with Batti and Jabina, and when they talked about “where does the rice come from”, Jabina first said: “The rice comes from the rice washing jar. Once I saw the maid in the palace Wash the rice.”
Bhati shook his hand to show that Robbina was wrong. He said, “The rice comes from the pot. I saw the maid serve the rice from the pot.”
After hearing this, Analu disagreed with the two of them. He seemed very confident and understood, and said: “The rice comes from the golden bowl that holds the rice. Every time we finish eating, the maids come from the golden bowl.” Add rice to the bowl for us to eat.”
Statements like this show that they, who were born as princes and grandchildren, have a naive understanding of society.
Although these little princes are ignorant of the society, their material comforts of food, clothing and housing are extremely luxurious in the world. They opened their mouths when they had food and stretched out their hands when they came for tea. This is how they lived a carefree childhood.
Why are princes and grandsons in their teens so superficial to the common sense of the world? It turns out that ever since the Buddha visited the four gates, lamented the fear of life, old age, sickness and death, and vowed to become a monk to learn Taoism, the palace has stipulated that young princes and grandchildren are not allowed to play outside the palace. Know the world.
2. Enthusiastically wish to become a monk
Anarud has grown up. The young Anarlud looks dignified. He is no longer young and ignorant. He gradually understands life and the world. The influence was really strong, and not long after, many royal family members converted to the Buddha and became rich. First, Nanda, who was about to inherit the throne, became a monk, and then Rahula became a novice, which shocked some young princes and grandchildren. Under such circumstances, Anarud determined to follow the Buddha to become a monk.
Anaru first found his elder brother Mahanan, and he said to Mahanan: “Brother! Recently the Buddha came back, and many of us have become monks. They are monks and spread the Buddha’s nectar dharma rain to all directions. What a meaningful life. Nanda let go of his beautiful wife, Sundari, and has entered the Sangha; Rahula is so young, but he also knows how to become a monk and learn Taoism; we two brothers, if none of us is a monk, I am really embarrassed, brother! What do you mean? ?”
The heroic prince, General Mahanan, has made a lot of military exploits for the country. Hearing what Analu said, he replied: “Brother! Your thoughts are the same as mine. We two brothers must have I want to talk to you about being a monk alone. From now on, my parents ask you to take care of me and let me become a monk with the Buddha!”
Analu shook his head, disapproving of his brother’s words, he said: “Brother! You can’t become a monk, the country needs you. Although I can also do some martial arts, I am still far behind my brother. Please allow me to become a monk , my temperament is more suitable for the quiet life of the Sangha, I hate the hustle and bustle now, and I really hate the life of the five desires in the palace!”
The elder brother couldn’t stand the younger brother’s persuasion, so he had to agree, but the Buddha stipulated that one must get the permission of his parents to become a monk, so Analu had to beg his parents hard, hoping that his parents would allow him to join the Sangha as a monk.
However, the parents love their children very much, and the parents will not allow any request from Analu. The parents refused three times in the request of Analu.
Later, because Anarud’s desire to become a monk was too strong, if his parents refused again, he would have to go on a hunger strike to die. His parents had no choice but to conveniently say: “If you really want to become a monk, you can go and discuss it with Prince Bati. He is willing to become a monk.” , I will allow you to become a monk with him, if he refuses, then don’t think about it.”
Speaking of persuading Prince Bati to become a monk, this is very impossible. Everyone knows that since Nanda and Rahula became monks, King Jingfan has appointed Bati as the prince, and he wants to succeed King Jingfan to rule Kapilavastu. How could he become a monk? But Anaru was not discouraged at all after hearing what his parents said. He happily went to find Prince Bati and asked him to become a monk together. he answered.
Prince Bati felt very embarrassed about abandoning the lust and pleasure of worldly glory and wealth to join the Sangha as a bhikkhu, but he was too embarrassed to refuse completely to Anaru, who had always been close, he thought for a long time, and reluctantly said: “Anarud! If you become a monk and become a monk, you should not miss the joys of the world. You and I are very young, how can this be done? Please wait a few years! Let us enjoy the joys of the world for another seven years, and I will go to become a monk with you. ”
Prince Bati obviously refused politely, but Analyt repeatedly explained that being a monk is also very happy, reducing from seven years to one year, from one year to January, and from January to the remaining seven days. Seeing that Prince Bati promised to become a monk together in seven days, he happily bid farewell to him and went home.
Seven days later, the two of them secretly ran away from home together with seven princes including Ananda, Deva, Posa, and Nanti. They also took the barber Upali with them, and followed the Buddha’s wandering route to Ayu in the city of Mina. Lin, took off the prince’s clothes and asked Upali to shave off the heads of the seven of them. Putting on cassocks, and then went to see the Buddha, the Buddha did not immediately allow them to join the Sangha, but asked them to live in an empty house, and after seven days of meditation, he asked them to forget their honorable status as princes, and then he allowed them to become monks and enter the Sangha .
3. Refusing a girl’s marriage proposal
After becoming a monk, Anarud listened to the scriptures and Dharma, and was willing to live an indifferent life. He always happily followed the Buddha’s teachings.
Although Anaru did not prove the fruit, but because of the support of Dharma music, in order to repay the favor of the Buddha for allowing him to become a monk, he wanted to take a trip and go to various places to promote the Dharma. The Buddha was very happy to encourage him, in the meaning of the Buddha , the disciples can be enthusiastic in propagating the Dharma and benefiting the students. From the work of spreading the Dharma and benefiting the students, they can grow their confidence and sublimate their confidence, and only then can they be enlightened and prove the fruit.
The young bhikkhu Analuddha has a dignified appearance and a graceful demeanor. His skin is yellow and his nose is like a parrot’s beak. He looks good and dignified. Once on the way to Honghua, because the location was remote and the sky was getting dark, he had to lodge with the folks. In the desolate countryside, the villages are also scattered. The family where Analu stayed has a large courtyard, but unexpectedly, on this day, there was no one in this family, only a young girl was at home.
Anarud was very hesitant. A bhikkhu was lodging in a house with only one young girl. I wondered if it was possible, because at that time the Buddha made precepts, and it seemed that this was not mentioned. Anarud looked at the darkening sky. It looked like it was raining, Analu didn’t say anything, so he had to stay.
Not long after Analu lived, an elderly passer-by also came to stay, but the girl refused him. Analy felt a little strange for being so rude and sympathetic to the old man.
The girl was very attentive to Analu, she brought tea and water, and asked long and short questions. Analu sat in lotus position in the house, chanting Buddha and Dharma and monks with all her heart, hoping that the dawn would be early so that she could hurry on her way.
In the middle of the night, the lights gradually dimmed. In the dimness, at the sound of the door, the young girl walked to Anaru’s bed. She said softly and affectionately: “You are a sramana, I know, and I have something wrong with a sramana.” It’s really a sin to think about it, but after I met you, I couldn’t suppress my love for you. Please believe me, I’m not a flirtatious girl. Recently, many famous young men proposed to me, but I refused them all. .But I saw your handsome appearance and decent behavior. Now I am not shy and voluntarily commit myself to you. Please live in my house from now on. My parents will be very happy too.”
Anaru, who is so handsome and a prince, has little experience in dealing with girls’ love. Before he became a monk, many young girls from the royal family surrounded him and proposed to him. Although Anaru is beautiful, he has always known that love is a bitter fruit. He does not regard lust as happiness. He believes that the real happiness is the stability of cultivation.
When a woman ignites the flame of love, it is not easy to extinguish it. Analu had no choice but to close her eyes tightly and ignore her, making her retreat in shame.
But the girl thought that Analudu was embarrassed, so she took a step closer and stroked Analv’s hand. Analyz was still like a towering mountain, standing still, and the girl even hugged him, Analyz opened her eyes and scolded : “Girl! Why are you so shameless? Men and women shouldn’t act like this! What’s more, I am a monk who has become a monk, and you are really rude to me!”
“The love between men and women in the world is the root of pain in life and death. Many troubles, disputes, and disputes are caused by love. Now I ask you to put out the fire of lust and observe your own heart carefully.”
Anaru’s righteous words made the girl bow her head in shame, and finally she felt repentant, and asked Anaru to accept her, converted to Buddhism, and became an upasika.
It is a human habit that men and women are attracted to each other, but practitioners must be able to transcend human nature in order to contact Buddha nature. Since then, Anarud no longer stays with his family.
4. Snails, clams and clams love sleep
Anaru’s Dao heart is very firm, although he is beautiful in front of him, he can sit still, and his heart is bright, as you can imagine. However, once he was admonished by the Buddha in order to sleep.
That was when the Buddha was preaching, probably because of Anarud’s drowsiness and fatigue, he dozed off. The Buddha looked at him and said, “Duduu, you are very sleepy. Inside a snail clam, you sleep for a thousand years, and you don’t smell it.” Buddha’s name.”
The person next to him pushed Analudu with his hand, and he woke up. The Buddha said to him, “Analuddha! You became a monk to learn the Tao because you feared the king’s law and feared thieves?”
“No!” Analy stood up and said respectfully.
“Then why did you become a monk and learn the Tao?”
“To get rid of birth, old age, sickness and death, to get rid of sorrow and distress.”
“Everyone praises you for not breaking the precepts for women. You seem to be very complacent now. You were sleeping while I was teaching the Dharma.”
Hearing what the Buddha said, Anaru quickly knelt down, clasped his hands together and said, “Buddha, please forgive me for my laziness and ignorance. From now on, I will never sleep again until the end of my life.”
The Buddha has always been very happy with disciples who are willing to admit their mistakes and repent. After Analuddha made his vows, the Buddha encouraged and comforted him, telling him to work hard. Although the practice should not be too slow, it should not be too hasty. From then on, Anarud worked hard from dawn to dusk, from darkness to light.
Practicing so diligently, he refuses to sleep for a while. It doesn’t matter for a day or two, but after a long time, even if a person can barely support his body, his body will always get sick. Soon, Analudu’s eyes became sick because of lack of sleep.
Analuddha made his eyes sick because of his hard work. After the Buddha knew about it, he was very worried. One day, the Buddha found Analyn and told him kindly: “Analudd! I told you that my practice is not enough. Of course not, but too much is equally bad.”
“I have made an oath in front of the Buddha, and I cannot break my oath!” Anarud replied respectfully and resolutely.
“Don’t worry about this problem, your eyes are important.”
Although the Buddha enlightened Anaru so mercifully, Anaru still refused to sleep. The Buddha had no choice but to say more conveniently: “Anarud! All living beings need food to survive. The ears feed on sound, the nose feeds on fragrance, the tongue feeds on taste, the body feeds on touch, and the eyes feed on food. Sleep is food, so go to sleep and don’t think about other problems, even Nirvana needs food.”
“What does Nirvana eat?”
“Nirvana feeds on not letting go! Not letting go can reach the state of non-action, and the state of non-action is also to feed on the joy of Zen and Dharma.”
“Buddha! The eyes feed on sleep, but it doesn’t matter if I don’t sleep. Please rest assured, Buddha!”
Analuddha was very grateful for the Buddha’s mercy, but he didn’t want to violate his oath, and he still didn’t sleep. The Buddha saw his red and swollen eyes, so he called the famous doctor Jiva to come and treat him. , as long as he is willing to sleep, his eyes will heal immediately, but Anaru just refuses to sleep.
Soon, Anarud’s eyes went blind.
From this, we can see Venerable Anarud’s determination to practice Taoism. Knowing that his eyes would be blind, he never backed down from his vow and refused to violate his vow. The Buddha only said one sentence, and he was so serious about practicing Taoism His respect for the Buddha can be imagined.
5. The Buddha personally sewed three clothes
Anarud, who is blind, has many inconveniences living in the Sangha, especially in begging and sewing.
However, the Sangha is very friendly and healthy. When they return from begging outside, they always distribute the rest to the sick monks. Anarud doesn’t bother about food. After being blind, he can’t see anything. It happened that Anaru was no longer affected by the outside world, and practiced Taoism wholeheartedly.
Once, Analu’s clothes were torn, and he wanted to mend them several times, but finally gave up because he couldn’t see them.
Later, his three robes were really worn out. Once Ananda passed by the Salara Rock where he lived alone, and said to him: “Bhikkhu Anarud, you can’t do without mending your three robes. The Buddha said, the bhikkhu’s It doesn’t matter if the clothes are new or old, but you must pay attention to the neatness and cleanliness.”
After hearing this, Anaru replied calmly: “Bhikkhu Ananda! I also tried to mend clothes, but because of my blindness, the needle and thread couldn’t go through the needle holes. Please, if you have time, help me make a set.” Is Sanyi okay?”
Ananda agreed very happily, and agreed that whenever he had time, he would come and sew three clothes for him.
After Ananda returned to Gion Garden Abode, he was looking for some monks to help him sew clothes, but the Buddha’s heavenly ear had long heard the conversation between the two of them. When the Buddha saw Ananda, he asked: “Ananda! Why don’t you ask me to help Anaru sew three clothes?”
Ananda was surprised by the Buddha’s question, and quickly replied: “Buddha! You are the most noble, how dare you work on the trivial matters between disciples? Buddha! I and the monks are willing to sew clothes for Anarudhi. We’re going right away.”
“Ananda! Don’t say that. I am a member of the Sangha just like all of you. I will let you go now. You don’t have to call many people.”
Ananda was very moved by what the Buddha said, and Moggallana, who was standing beside him, was also moved by the Buddha’s profound kindness after hearing the Buddha’s words. They were all willing to help the Buddha sew three clothes for Anarud.
When the Buddha came to the Sala Luoyan, he said to Analu, “Anarud! Take out your needle and thread, and I will help you make clothes.”
Analuddha who listened to the Buddha’s words! Feeling terrified and panicked, Analu, who could no longer see anything, had a few crystal clear tears of gratitude floating in his eyes, not knowing how to answer.
The Buddha threaded the needle and thread, and then took out the cloth to cut, and Ananda and others helped to sew. It took only one day for the Buddha to sew three clothes for Anaru.
One is the teacher, the Buddha with perfect merit, and the other is the disciple, the blind bhikkhu. Between them, the love of the teacher and the respect of the disciples fully demonstrate the master-student relationship in Buddhism. Teaching by example is more important than teaching by words. It is a good example for everyone in the future.
6. Reasons for the Fall of Women
Anarud is blind. Although his heart is very bright, there are always many things that are not satisfactory for a person who does not see the sun. Since the Buddha sewed three clothes for him, the Buddha took pity on him and taught him to practice Vajra After illuminating the samadhi, soon, Analudu was certified to have a celestial eye. Not to mention his own joy and gratitude, the Buddha’s joy is also in his heart, and the Buddha is not relieved until now!
The so-called celestial eye means that it can see regardless of distance, regardless of whether it is inside or outside. Anaruddha, who lost his physical eyes and attained celestial eye, is admired and respected by many members of the Sangha. But it is also the result of Anarud’s resolute voluntary practice. Since then, Anarud no longer bothered about sewing clothes and begging for alms bowls. He could see what others could not see. Among the disciples. With his celestial eye, he can see that there is a Paradise of Ultimate Bliss in the west. Judging from the proof of the celestial eye Anarud, it is easy for beginners to develop pious confidence in the pure land of Amitabha.
Anarud’s heavenly eye can not only see the Paradise of Paradise, but also see various situations in hell. Once, he saw many women falling into hell, so he ran to ask the Buddha, “Buddha! I saw many women fall into hell today. In my opinion, it is easy for women to believe in the Buddha’s teachings. Women More compassionate than men, why do so many women go to hell?”
The Buddha replied: “Analud! In my teaching, it is true that women are easy to believe in, but it is also true that women are easy to create sins. Women have three kinds of hearts that are greater than men.
When she gets up, she has the most greedy heart, and she hopes that all the treasures in the world can enter her home; second, when a woman is in the middle of the day, she has the most jealous heart, and she feels that everyone in the world will hinder her; third , A woman’s lust is strongest at dusk, and she looks at the opposite sex accompanying her from time to time. Analud! Women’s greed, jealousy, and lust are the most likely to cause them to commit crimes. That’s why those women fell.”
Because of Anarud’s heavenly eye, seeing some women fall into hell, leading to this passage of Buddha’s sermon to women, this is just a testimony for women to reflect on themselves!
Anaruddha has attained the Holy Fruit, has the divine eye, and has become a disciple of the head of the Sangha, but once when he was discussing the Tao with Venerable Shariputra, the elder Shariputra gave him a celestial eye for him to prove the divine eye. The reason for the impolite instruction is that Analuddha asked Shariputra: “Venerable Shariputra! With my pure heavenly eyes, I can see the three thousand great worlds. I have righteous thoughts that are diligent and immovable. Now, my body seems to be swimming freely in the world.” In the quiet world, my mind is free from grasping and is no longer distracted. May I ask my lord, is this the liberation from afflictions?”
Venerable Shariputra is the most senior person in the Sangha. He can often speak on behalf of the Buddha. After hearing what Venerable Anaru said, he expressed his opinion: “Venerable Anaru! Just now you said that you saw The heavenly eye of the three thousand great worlds, this is my arrogance; you say that you have unmoving righteous thoughts, this is restlessness; you say that your heart is free from grasping and no longer distracted, this is arrogance. From what I understand According to the teachings of the Buddha, you can only get rid of your afflictions if you get rid of your arrogance, restlessness, and arrogance!”
For what Shariputra said, Anarud was not only not angry, but also very grateful to Shariputra. He understood that what Shariputra said is what a true seer can say. Venerable Anarud is such an open-minded person!
7. Silent Pleasure in the Woods
Once, when the Buddha lived in Kuyanmi, there was a fierce dispute among his disciples. The Buddha told everyone the story of the King of Longevity who endured humiliation and asked everyone to stop the dispute. It takes compassion and patience to quench the flames of resentment.”
The words of the Buddha moved many people to get rid of their hatred, but there are still a small number of people who are unlawful and fond of disputes and refuse to make concessions to others. At this time, the Buddha thought of the patient and humble Anaru, who is currently in the country of Vaji Buddha practiced Taoism in the Boliyeshaluo forest, and the Buddha walked alone to see him.
Polyyesha Luolin, in addition to living in Anarud, there are Bati and Robbina who also practiced with Anarud. These three are brothers. They had a very good relationship when they were at home, and they also had a very good relationship after they became monks. The three of them have a covenant to follow the Buddha to practice Taoism together, and follow the Buddha’s instructions in all practices.
Among them, Venerable Analuddha is now an Arhat who has attained the eye of the sky. Bati and Robinna also became enlightened in Xia Anju in the year when they first became monks. life, needless to say.
They agreed that they are not allowed to talk at ordinary times, and a meeting will be held on the fifth day to report their practice experience and discuss how to improve their lives. In normal times, when they go out begging for alms bowls, the person who comes back first has to cover the bed and seat first, then draw water, then take out the utensils for washing feet and the cloth towels for wiping feet, and place water bottles. Put it in a cool place, or in water free from insects, and leave it for those who are not full after returning from alms round.
After tidying up everything, you can clean your hands and feet, tidy up the altar of the nuns, enter the room, chant the Buddha, the Dharma, the monks, or sit in meditation. Those who come back later, if they are not full, will eat the leftovers of their predecessors. If there are still leftovers, they should be placed on the clean ground or in insect-free water like the former ones. In another place, I cleaned the dining hall, packed the clothes and bowls, and after washing my hands and feet, opened the altar of nuns, and practiced meditation like those who came back before.
Like this until late at night, the person who came out of samadhi first got up to see if there was still water in the water bottle and bath jar, and if there was no water, he went to get it. After being carried away silently, they quietly returned to their room, and they lived such a peaceful life in this secluded forest.
The Buddha who doesn’t like to live in angry and noisy places, in order to remember Venerable Anarudhi, visited this peaceful forest. Outside the forest, there was a forest guard who didn’t know the Buddha, because the Buddha usually practiced in various places, always There are many disciples following him. Today, the Buddha is alone. If you don’t pay attention, you will never think that it is the presence of the Buddha. The forest guard stopped the Buddha and said, “You cannot go into this forest, because there are three saints practicing in it.”
The Buddha smiled and replied serenely, “Please go and tell them that someone is coming. They must be very happy to see me.”
The forest guards went to report this, and the three people, including Anarud, were overjoyed when they saw that it was the presence of the Buddha’s Dharma. Robinna hurried to draw water to wash the Buddha’s feet. The Buddha was welcomed by these three pious disciples. After washing his hands and feet, he sat down and asked them about their life and practice. They reported truthfully, and the Buddha was very happy to hear that.
The Buddha said with great joy: “You practice the Tao in harmony, live a peaceful, peaceful and happy life without disputes, with one heart and one virtue, one teacher and one teacher, and you are in harmony with each other like milk and milk. There is nothing more perfect in life than this.”
The Buddha praised them, and then further explained his past cultivation process to encourage them. From the whirlpool of strife, he came to the peaceful Sangha. The Buddha was very happy. Joy in my heart, smile on my brow.
8. Moved the group of thieves to become a Buddha
After realizing the Heavenly Eye, Analu was not completely busy in the deep mountains and jungles. He often thought in his heart: “I can have such Dharma music today because of the kindness of the Buddha. In order to repay the Buddha, We should spread the Dharma and benefit living beings, and go to places where no one preaches.”
Anaru, who is calm on the outside, has infinite enthusiasm in his heart. Although there are Anaru walking in the king’s palace and the mansion of the elders, Anaru is often seen teaching in the mountains and villages.
Manatina of the Zhanbo Kingdom was seriously ill once, but after listening to Anarud’s teachings, he let go of his sorrows and troubles, and suddenly recovered; I love visiting patients.
In addition to the patients who like Analud, Analv is also very good at reversing those who have influenced viciously.
As we said earlier, Anarud once lodged in a family, and the girl from that family had seduced and entangled him in every possible way. He vowed never to stay in the family’s house again. Naturally, there is a lot of inconvenience, but Anarud is used to living a simple and simple life, one meal a day and one night under a tree, this has become a norm for Venerable Anarud.
Once, Analudu went to a village, and that night Analut meditated in a wood near the village, the sky was hazy with moonlight, the sparse tree shadows on the ground, meteors streaked across the sky, and the breeze was blowing gently, Analu closed his eyes and sat in meditation, waiting for the dawn.
In the stillness of the night, Anarud was as silent as the earth, but suddenly a group of figures moved towards his seat in the distance. Anarud wanted to cough, but those people stopped not far in front of him. Analu with Sky Eyes took a closer look, it turned out to be a group of robbers who were dividing up the looted items, Analu sighed loudly.
The thieves knew someone, and one of the thieves said, “Oh no! It’s unlucky to be seen. Let’s kill him!”
A group of robbers all held sharp knives in their hands.
Analu said in a loud voice: “If you want to kill me, come on, if you kill me, someone will naturally kill you!”
The group of thieves were shocked when they heard this, and looked at each other, not knowing what to do. One of the thieves was more daring, so he asked, “Who are you? Destroying our good deeds in the dark!”
Venerable Anarud replied solemnly: “I am a recluse, and I am sitting here meditating. It is true to say that I have seen you doing bad things, but it is not true to say that I have destroyed your good deeds.”
“Are you going to tell the government?” The robber asked again.
“I won’t report it to the government, but I want to tell you that even if the government doesn’t know about your actions, karma will not spare you. Thinking of your tragic end in the future, I really sympathize!”
Anaru’s words touched the hearts of a group of robbers. They let go of their evil hearts and showed their original good nature. They repented and listened to the Buddha’s teachings. Later, they all asked Analaw to introduce them to the Buddha. From now on, Change your mind and be a good person.
The next day, Anarud asked the group of thieves to return the looted things to others. Those who lost their things and found them again thanked the Venerable Anarud. They also converted to the Buddha and believed in Buddhism.
9. Studying the Eight Great Masters
Anaru was still practicing while spreading the Dharma. One day, when he was sitting in the village of Shoushuizhu in the Zhiti Kingdom, he thought: “Tao is not obtained by greed, but by contentment; , not in a noisy place, but in a quiet place; seeking the Tao requires diligence, righteous thoughts, knowledge and wisdom.”
When Anaru was thinking this way, the Buddha knew his mind in the deer garden of Poqishou, so he came to Shoushuizhu Village to praise Anaru’s righteous thoughts. Anaru met the Buddha himself again. Come to see his honor.
Anarud wanted to ask the Buddha to confirm and speak out the questions he was thinking, so he asked: “Buddha! In the Sangha of Liuhe Jing, forget selfishness and ego, this is what we should do You should know that you should be absolutely compassionate and benevolent to all living beings. However, Buddha! There are many believers who study Taoism at home, and there are also many disciples who become monks and approach society to spread the Dharma and benefit living beings. How do they seek enlightenment and enter Nirvana? , ask the Buddha to give a merciful instruction.”
The Buddha liked to talk about the Eight Great People’s Enlightenment: “Analuddha! You have asked very well. All you care about is the question of learning from Bodhisattvas. Let me tell you about the Eight Great People’s Enlightenment. All Buddha disciples should be able to do it regardless of day and night. Sincerely recite:
“First, you should have a view of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, selflessness, and impurity in the world and life. If you want to escape life and death and seek enlightenment, you must observe this way.
“Second, you need to know the root of suffering, which is the attachment to the world, and you must have less desire and do nothing in order to achieve physical and mental freedom.
“Thirdly, you should examine your insatiable hearts, which are greedy and commit crimes all day long. If you can live in poverty, live contentedly, and pursue wisdom as your career, then you can have a stable life.
“Fourth, you must avoid doing good deeds and slack off. Don’t be discouraged after doing things that are beneficial to others. Only by eliminating afflictions and subduing devils can you escape from the prison of the five Yins and three realms.
“Fifth, you should understand the horror of ignorance, life and death, and study all Buddhist teachings carefully, especially after you understand the truth, you should set your mind to teach and transform all living beings and give them happiness.
“Sixth, you should realize that poor people have a lot of resentment, and Bodhisattvas should give them material relief and spiritual comfort, don’t remember hatred, and don’t blame others.
“Seventh, you live in the world, don’t be defeated by the five desires in the world, whether you are a monk or a monk, you should always live a pure and lofty life without getting involved in worldly happiness.
“Eighth, you should not be self-sufficient. You must develop the Mahayana to help all sentient beings. You would rather send sentient beings away from suffering than seek happiness for yourself.”
Because of Venerable Anaruddha’s question, the Buddha finished talking about the eight problems of practicing bodhisattvas. Many people have improved their lives and made their lives more comfortable and happy by practicing in this way.
One day, Analuddha was meditating on the Buddha’s eight great enlightenments. He thought: This method is the method of less desire and contentment, not the method of dissatisfaction; It is the law of peace, not the law of laziness; it is the law of righteous thoughts, not the law of delusion;
Mentors and disciples, the singing and harmony between them, the truth of the universe and life, and the path of practice and liberation, in fact, this is what it is.
10. Chores of old age
Analuddha, who was so active in social education and received such a special encounter from the Buddha in the religious order, must have had more great and glorious deeds in his life history. We cannot describe them now, but only think of him, Shariputra, and Jianlian and other great disciples have the same status in the Sangha!
It is impossible to know when and where Venerable Anarud passed away. However, it is certain that during the time of Buddha’s Nirvana, both Venerable Anarudhi and Ananda were at the bedside of Buddha’s Nirvana among the two Sala trees in the city of Kushinajara.
Before the Buddha passed Nirvana, on the night of February 15th, there was a full moon on the western mountain, which was extraordinarily bright. In the white woods lay the 80-year-old Buddha, surrounded by many disciples. The Buddha gave the last teaching to everyone. , the night was quiet, everyone did not dare to breathe, the Buddha exhorted his disciples to observe the precepts, to spread the Dharma, to cultivate their hearts, to protect their mouths, to endure humiliation, to have less desires, and to be diligent. , recorded in detail.
At the end of the Buddha’s speech, he asked everyone a question as if he was thinking about it: “My disciples, don’t forget the Dharma I have taught you. I am like a good doctor. I know the disease and prescribe the medicine. If you take it or not, you will be blamed.” I am not a doctor; I am like a good guide, guiding people to a good way. Whether you do it or not, it is not a guide. All monks and disciples! The Four Noble Truths and Twelve Causes and Conditions I mentioned are the truths I have realized. Hang, the one who believes and understands the Four Noble Truths and Twelve Causes and Conditions without doubt is his door to the Tao, and now I am going to Nirvana, if you have any doubts, you can ask me quickly, and I will explain it for you!”
The earnest Buddha asked this question three times in the quiet night. Everyone was silent and no one answered. It was the atmosphere of the Buddha’s imminent Nirvana that deterred all the disciples, and it was also the reason that all the disciples had already lost their understanding of the Four Noble Truths and the Twelve Causes and Conditions. There is no doubt that they are all regular disciples who have followed the Buddha for many years. There will be no confusion about the fundamental Dharma.
At this time, Ana, who is the most qualified to talk to the Buddha when the Buddha is about to Nirvana Venerable Vinaya put his right knee on the ground, clasped his palms in respect, and addressed the Buddha on behalf of everyone: “Buddha! Our disciples all believe that the Four Noble Truths and Twelve Causes and Conditions are the truths of life in the universe. Cold, the moon can make it hot, the snow-capped mountains can become the sea, the earth can be turned into ruins, the teachings of the four saints and twelve karmas spoken by the Buddha must not be changed!”
The Buddha listened quietly, with a slight smile on his face, like the last words of Venerable Anarudhi to the Buddha, which can comfort the Buddha for forty-nine years of wandering and wandering!
After the Buddha’s Nirvana, five hundred great arhats assembled the Tripitaka in the big stone room of Mount Qijabori, and Venerable Anaruddhi must have been among them. It is a pity that there is no news about his later deeds!
Venerable Anarud has a strong and unwavering will, and he was taught just because of a doze, and he is not discouraged even when he is blind. His diligent spirit is so sublime that people can’t help but sigh! Lost the physical eye, but gained the divine eye, practiced peacefully and preached peacefully, he is indeed the leader of the sect!
