Introduction to The City of Volos, Greece

Volos City in Greece

Volos is a coastal port city in Thessaly situated midway on the Greek mainland, about 330 kilometres north of Athens and 220 kilometres south of Thessaloniki. It is the sixth most populous city of Greece, and the capital of the Magnesia regional unit of the Thessaly Region. Wikipedia

Modern Volos is built on the turf of three ancient cities. The three ancient cities were Demetrias, Pagasae, and Iolcos. To the west of the city lies the remains of the Neolithic Age.

After the division of the Roman Empire, Volos belonged to the Eastern Roman Empire. In the eighth century, the Greek region was invaded by the Bulgarians. Centered on their camp between Volos and Velestino, these invading Bulgarians sacked the entire region of Thessaly. In the 14th century, Volos came under Serbian control and later by the Republic of Venice. Volos was besieged by Turkish troops in 1393–1397 and incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in 1423. In 1881 the city seceded from Turkey and returned to Greece.
