Why did Yang Wulang become a monk?

Brief introduction of Yang Yande Yang Yande, the fifth son of Yang Ye, the old Linggong of Jindao, is named Yang Chun and styled Yande. In Qin Opera’s “Golden Beach”, the play “Wulang becomes a monk” plays an important role. According to the plot, in the Battle of Jinshatan, among the eight brothers of the Yang family, Dalang died in place of the King of Song, Erlang was defeated and drew his sword and killed himself, Saburo was trampled to death by a chaotic horse, Shiro and Hachiro lost their country, Goro Yang Yanzhao survived, and hated the treacherous officials in power The imperial court, unwilling to be an official in the court, resolutely became a monk in Mount Wutai.

Recently, I learned from the column about introducing Buddhist culture in the “Wutai Mountain Tourism News” that Chinese Buddhism introduced the cause and effect of Yang Wulang’s monkhood as follows: Wutai Mountain Taiping Xingguo Temple is also known as Yang Wulang Temple, commonly known as Wulang Temple. It is located on the hillside 2 kilometers north of Xiantong Temple.

According to legend, Song Taizong’s visit to Wutai Mountain was escorted by Yang’s father and son. In Mount Wutai, Yang Wulang met Rui Jian, the abbot of Taiping Xingguo Temple. During several contacts, Goro admired Ruijian’s profound knowledge, and Ruijian also liked Goro’s character.

Although Yang Wulang has no intention of becoming a monk, Rui Jian always instills some Buddhist deeds and precepts in Wulang, and persuades him to abandon his armor and become a monk. But Goro never had enough courage. When parting, Ruijian gave Goro a package and said: “It will help you get out of trouble.”

When the two armies of Song and Liao fought against Jinshatan, due to Pan Renmei’s frame, the Yang family was defeated. Four Qilang and Eight Tigers died and two were captured. When Yang Wulang broke through into a forest, there was no escape route ahead, and there were pursuers behind him. At this critical moment, Goro remembered Ruijian’s package, and when he opened it, it turned out to be a monk’s hat and a black cassock. Goro Resenting the treacherous officials in power, he decided to become a monk.

So he wore a monk’s hat and a black cassock, and walked out of the woods. Seeing that it was the monk, the Liao soldiers ignored him, so that Goro was saved from being captured.

After Yang Wulang came to Taiping Xingguo Temple, people called the valley where the temple is located Wulang Valley, and the temple was called Yang Wulang Temple, commonly known as Wulang Temple, but few people called it Taiping Xingguo Temple.

According to legend, Goro practiced martial arts every day after he became a monk. Driven by him, more and more people practiced martial arts. Goro organized these people and established a monk soldier. Since monks were not allowed to use swords, guns, swords and halberds, Goro used an 81-jin iron rod. Legend has it that one day Liao general Han Chang led his troops to Yanmen Pass and was about to set up camp, but Wulang suddenly came out of the pass and hit the head with a stick. With a “click”, Han Chang’s fork was cut in half. Han Chang was so frightened that he turned his horse’s head and ran away, but Wulang’s stick was faster, and he hit him with one stick, and Han Chang was split in two.

Because of Wulang’s excessive force, the iron rod chopped off Han Chang, and then crushed a big stone on the side of the road, and the iron rod also left a crack more than a foot long. Wulang’s iron rod with cracks is now in the cultural relics exhibition room of the high hall at the back of Xiantong Temple. It is one of the ten scenic spots of Mount Wutai.

After the ancients saw this iron rod, they left such a poem: the country is few and the horses do not neigh, and the white clouds are deeply locked in the Wulang Temple. The Song family’s world has turned into a dream, and the iron rod is always twisted to hate someone.

From the explanations of the above two cultural versions, it can be seen that the real and only reason for Goro to become a monk is that he has seen through the nature of the corrupt court in which the treacherous officials are in power, and he is unwilling to serve it anymore.
