Deathbed

{Narration by Master Huilu‧Compilation}

This section is the outline and key points of “Preparation for Dying”. For those who don’t have time to read long articles, reading this “Essentials for Dying” will not only save time, but also greatly benefit their dying aids. Those who are interested should not take it lightly .

1. When seriously ill

1. To comfort the sick to let go of all predestined relationships and help them fulfill their last wishes so as not to be obsessed with attachments.

2. If there is no way to recover, do not give first aid or use a resuscitator, so as not to increase the pain of the patient.

3. If the medicine fails to work, it should be sent home as soon as possible, so that the patient can die in a familiar environment, which is more comfortable and convenient for meditation.

4. The patient’s diet should be mainly vegetarian.

5. It is advisable for the patient to make a will in advance so that the descendants can follow them when dealing with the aftermath.

2. Within 16 hours from dying to dying

1. Do not let persistent people get close to cause love or hatred.

2. If the patient is bleeding profusely, in order to prevent insects and ants from climbing onto the corpse, a water tray can be placed on the four feet of the bed. This is to prevent human nature from generating evil thoughts when swinging.

3. Do not send the dead to the ice bank or apply antiseptic immediately after dying of breath. This will make the dead feel like entering a freezing hell or become a ghoul.

4. Do not rush to bathe or change clothes.

5. Do not give up clinically, or say goodbye to the patient sadly, so as not to increase his attachment, and persuade him to let go and chant Buddha.

6. Do not touch or move the sick person. The posture should be based on the most comfortable one for the sick person.

7. After the breath is cut off, the original nasal tube, gastric tube, etc. should be gently removed to facilitate meditation.

8. Sprinkle golden light sand to cover the mantra wheel and the reincarnation quilt.

9. Divide classes to help recite, so that the Buddha’s name will continue.

10. Don’t test the hot air, where is the coldness afterward, but this is not the case for great practitioners, you can gently test it with the back of the middle finger of your hand.

11. Don’t pay homage to food or put money in your hands, because the dead may not be criminals, and whether NT dollars can pass in the underworld is still open to question.

12. Allow the deceased to assume the posture when he dies, do not twist the body, and make him sleep. After chanting, if the joints become hard or you cannot close your eyes, you can apply warm compresses with a towel.

13. Don’t rush to cover the coffin and bury it.

14. Do not incinerate ghost papers and money for rebirth.

15. Do not burn paper to bind the dead, such as: burning paper houses, paper carts, etc. This is based on the concept of the yang world, imposed on the deceased.

16. Abolish all untimely red tapes, such as accepting coffins, begging for water, resigning from students, wearing headbands, wearing straw sandals, mourning sticks, plum blossom balls, and holding umbrellas for funerals, etc.

3. How to use Jinguangsha

1. Amount to use: About one fingernail is enough.

2. Parts of use: forehead (above the two eyebrows, about the middle of the hair and eyebrows), heart, throat, hands (palms) and other five places.

3. Function: Wherever it is projected, it will emit light.

4. Burial:

  • (1) Sprinkle for the first time when you are dying and after dying (you don’t need to use super glue at this time).
  • (2) After the coffin is covered, sprinkle the second time on the coffin lid at the vertical line of the head.
  • (3) After the burial, sprinkle it on the vertical line of the head for the third time (it should be sprinkled on the grave instead of the tombstone).
  • (4) After the death, the golden light sand was obtained for many years. Before using it, you should use this merit to dedicate to the deceased, the lonely ghosts there, and all living beings in the Dharma Realm.

5. Cremation:

  • (1) Sprinkle for the first time when you are dying and after dying (you don’t need to use super glue at this time).
  • (2) After cremation, the bones are picked up, and after the remains are put into the altar, they are scattered on the ashes.
  • (3) If the urn has been sealed, squeeze a little superglue on the urn cover, and sprinkle golden light sand on it.

4. Mantra wheel

There are three of them. At the time of death, it is placed on the chest, and the order of placement is not clearly stipulated. Generally, the Dabao Guangbo Pavilion Shanzhu Secret Dharani Wheel is placed on the top, and the direction is the spire upwards.

The mantra is the law, and the mantra wheel is also the law. It is said by Vairocana Buddha.

1. Burial: put it on the chest when dying, take it off when changing clothes, and put it back after changing clothes.

2. Cremation: Put it on the chest when dying, take it off when changing clothes, and put it back after changing clothes. Before covering the coffin, it should be removed, placed vertically against the chest, placed on the coffin lid, and pressed down with paperweights to fix it. It should be taken away during cremation, and after the cremation is complete, the golden light sand should be sprinkled, and then the mantra wheel should be placed on the ashes.

If you have been reborn for many years and the urn cannot be opened, you can place the mantra wheel on the urn and fix it with plastic wrap or other things.

5. Past life quilt

1. Function: This collection of secret mantras of all Buddhas is written in Sanskrit (or Tibetan), just like a “Tibetan Sutra”, with incredible blessing power. All living beings in the underworld see it as a piece of light, which can make the dead eliminate their karma and crimes, and avoid being hurt by enemies and demons in previous lives.

The “lotus flower quilt” that is in circulation in the market has no blessing power, it is only “solemn”. If the sick person insists on covering it, he can add a rebirth quilt on it.

2. Covering method: put the one with the words “Namo Amitabha Buddha” on top, and cover it up to the chest. If the face of death is ugly, it can be covered up to the top of the head.

3. Burial:

  • ( 1) It can be covered if the breath is not exhausted (sprinkle golden light sand first, then put three mantra wheels, and then cover the past life quilt).
  • ( 2) After the reading aid is finished, the quilt of the past life is lifted, and after changing clothes, it is still covered.
  • ( 3) The body is put into the coffin, and the quilt and mantra wheel are also buried with the coffin, but they should be covered on the body of the deceased instead of the coffin.

4. Cremation:

  • ( 1) It can be covered if the breath is not exhausted (sprinkle golden light sand first, then put three mantra wheels, and then cover the past life quilt).
  • ( 2) After the reading aid is finished, the quilt of the past life is lifted, and after changing clothes, it is still covered.
  • ( 3) When the coffin is to be covered and cremated, the deceased is taken out and folded. Once the ashes are put into the altar, golden light sand is sprinkled, a mantra wheel is placed on it, and the ashes are wrapped in the altar in the previous life.
  • ( 4) In order to avoid contamination in the past life, it can also be broken into small pieces and put into the altar. It is only feasible to wait for the remains to cool down, so as not to cause the residual temperature to be too high and cause damage to the past.
  • ( 5) The reincarnation cannot be cremated, because there are mantra wheels and Buddha names on it, and it has been burned before. Unless the whole thing is stained with blood, it can be cremated respectfully, and the name of “Amitabha Buddha” should be recited at the time of cremation.
  • ( 6) If it gets wet accidentally, another new quilt should be taken to cover the deceased, and the wet quilt should be dried before spreading under the new quilt.

6. Chanting

1. Significance: The patient’s mental strength is weak, and he cannot continue to read for a long time. He must rely on the help of others to get strength.

2. Prepare items

  • ( 1) Set up a temporary Buddhist hall: a square table, spread yellow cloth or yellow paper on it, place a three-foot large Western Sansheng or Amitabha statue, nailed to the wall or placed on the table, preferably not lower than the waist , the orientation is based on the principle that the sick can see, but the soles of the sick should not face the Buddha statue. If the venue is limited and the patient cannot see the Buddha statue, another set of Buddha statues can be prepared and invited from time to time so that the patient can look at it.
  • ( 2) Buddha offerings: censer, a pair of lotus lamps, high-grade agarwood (not to be interrupted, nor too vigorous, so as to make the air turbid and affect meditation), a cup of water, fresh flowers, four fruits, etc.
  • ( 3) Draw two chimes for changing shifts, but the volume should not be louder than the sound of chanting Buddha’s name.
  • ( 4) Buddha chanting machine, four-character Buddha name tape or laser disc (CD).
  • ( 5) Golden bright sand, mantra wheel, rebirth quilt.
  • ( 6) Chairs: Prepare according to the number of chanting attendees.
  • ( 7) Announcements for reading aids and tribute texts.

3. Precautions

( 1) Family members

a. If you have already invited a pure audience or a chanting group to assist in chanting, do not invite heretic masters and witches (commonly known as masters) to mix in at the same time, so as not to hinder righteous thoughts and damage the dignity of Buddhism. If there are monks and monks who come to help chant, the family members will pay homage to the master for the sick.

b. Those who participate in the chanting should obey the guidance of the head of the chanting and fully cooperate.

c. If it is not possible for an emotionally intelligent lotus friend to come to help the chant, the family members should fully undertake the responsibility of helping the chant.

( 2) Part of the prayer group

a. The immediate family members’ consent should be obtained before chanting.

b. When arriving at the funeral home, first meet the head of the household and let him lead you in, so as not to be suspected of missing items.

c. Treat the patient with sincerity and respect, and regard the sick as relatives.

d. The tea prepared by the bereaved family is drinkable, and the three meals are taken care of by oneself, so as not to add to the troubles of the family members.

e. Face towels, soaps and other things related to bereavement can be accepted, or offered to monks and nuns.

f. The red envelopes given by the bereaved family must not be accepted, because lay people cannot plant a field of blessings for all living beings.

g. After the chanting, after returning home, you should take a bath, wash your hair, and change your clothes before you can do your homework in front of the Buddha.

h. For example, you don’t have to focus on Haiqing when you are reciting. If you wear Haiqing, you can prepare two pieces, one for worshiping Buddha and doing homework, and one for helping chanting, so you don’t need to wash it frequently.

( 3) When chanting

a. Rinse your mouth before helping the chanting, and those who are chanting should not eat onions, garlic and other five spices. In order to avoid evil spirits, you can wear a curse wheel.

b. It is forbidden to gossip in the sick room. If you feed the sick, you should still chant the Buddha’s name to prevent the sick from being distracted and losing righteous thoughts. If relatives and friends come to visit, they can be invited to participate in the prayer. Those who don’t want to help the recitation will be taken to another place for entertainment.

c. Use the four-character Buddha name “Amitabha Buddha” from the beginning to the end. Because the breath of the dying person is weak and the mind is not easy to concentrate, the fewer words the better. The speed and tone should be high or low, and noises such as coughing and sneezing should be avoided.

d. When the pulse and breathing are getting weaker, start chanting. When reciting, play the chime when the words “A” and “Tuo” are heard. The sound is clear, and it makes people feel pure. The sound of wooden fish is muddy, which is not suitable for reading.

e. There are many chanting assistants, and they can be divided into batches to help chanting. One class lasts up to two hours. I am afraid that the mind will be weakened and the power of the mind (that is, the light) will be reduced if there are few people. The audio tape does not participate in the chanting aid, because living people have the power of mind, mind and light. When chanting Buddha, it will emit light, bless and ward off evil spirits, while the sound of the machine has no such effect.

f. To play the audio tape of the Buddha’s name, it is not allowed to plug the earphones into the patient’s ears, so as not to control the volume.

g. After you die, you should continue to read for 16 hours. It would be better if you can read for 24 hours. In principle, you should wait until the body is completely cold.

h. After recitation, return to the deceased on behalf of the Buddha.

( 4), special circumstances

a. When the patient is dying, if his consciousness is confused, he can use cotton dipped in great compassion water to smear his lips to make his consciousness clear.

b. Within three hours after the death of the deceased, the chanting helper will arrive. At this time, the deceased should be concisely enlightened on the wish of giving birth to the West, and then perform the chanting.

c. In the final stage of suffering, even struggling and screaming, this is the entanglement of karmic creditors, making them unable to live or die. Rebirth Mantra 108 times, and recite it when the consciousness and emotion are stable.

d. If you have a lot of bad karma, slander the Three Jewels, hinder people’s practice, etc., you must first take refuge in the Three Refuges and ask for repentance when you are doing chanting. At this time, in front of the deceased, first tell the deceased that taking refuge in the Triple Gem can plant good roots and reap immeasurable blessings, so he wants to take refuge in front of the Buddha on his behalf. Recite the following before the Buddha:

My disciple XX takes the Three Refugees on behalf of the deceased XXX.

“Take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, and take refuge in the Sangha.

Take refuge in Buddha, two-legged respect.

Take refuge in the law, leave desire and respect.

Take refuge in the Sangha, respected among all.

Take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, and take refuge in the Sangha. “(Three titles)

Reflection:

My disciple XX begs for repentance before the Buddha on behalf of the deceased XXX.

“All the evil karma created in the past are all caused by beginningless greed, hatred and ignorance.

From body, speech and mind, I now repent of everything. “(Three titles)

e. If the pain is unbearable at the end of life, you can inject analgesics and sedatives (with the principle of not harming the brain soberness), so as to benefit the mind and recite the Buddha.

f. Helping to recite for a period of time, there may be a phenomenon of flashback. Don’t mistakenly think that the condition is getting better, and you should pay attention to its changes.

7. How to benefit the deceased

1. Families should be mournful and obedient, and follow the Dharma, so that the dead can be saved.

2. You can set up a memorial tablet in each dojo where the Dharma meeting is held, or ask eminent monks and great virtues to return to the dead for the elimination of sins and obstacles, and to be reborn in the Buddha’s land during the morning and evening classes.

3. After cremation, the bones turn black, indicating that the deceased has serious bad karma (long-term medication, not counting), so he should be super recommended immediately, and ask for repentance, scripture printing, and release…etc.

4. Make seven

( 1) Qiqi algorithm: It should be counted from the day of death, the seventh day is the first seven, the fourteenth day is the second seven, and so on.

( 2) Because every moving point may be reincarnated, it is advisable to do the seven exercises one day in advance, and recite the Buddha’s name every day.

( 3) Stealing the sun is popular nowadays, but this method is not advisable.

( 4) During the July 7th period, family members should become vegetarians and abstain from prostitution. Vegetarian food should be used instead of meat during sacrifices and hospitality, and alcohol and meat are prohibited. The crime of killing for mourning will be borne by the deceased, so don’t be careless.

5. Participate in chanting sutras, worshiping repentance, fighting Buddha Seven (or Dizang Seven), water and land pujas, flame openings, etc., and dedicate merit to the deceased.

6. Invite monks to preside over Buddhist affairs, and do not invite shamans and Taoists.

7. Death is based on piety.

8. Family members should participate in religious rituals devoutly, and should not appoint a master to stay out of the matter. In addition to performing the seven rituals and participating in various dharma meetings, family members should also chant Buddha and sutras every day, and dedicate merit to the deceased.

9. To get rid of superstitions, such as leading death, returning evil spirits, or using funerals as unclean to cover Buddha statues, etc.

10. The attendant is at the side, personally inspecting the coffin, in order to protect the remains and maintain the dignity of the deceased.

11. Reduce funeral expenses and transfer them to various merits and virtues, such as: giving to the poor, printing scriptures and statues, making offerings to the Three Treasures, paving roads and building bridges, releasing lives…etc. There is no need to invite the five sons to cry at the tomb, the filial daughter Bai Qin to make a strong presence or the coffin Thick funeral.
