Introduction to music in the Netherlands

In terms of classical music, the Netherlands has a large number of orchestras spread across the Netherlands. One of the most prestigious is the Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which often performs abroad. The famous small orchestras include the Eighteenth Century Orchestra, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and the Amsterdam Shomberg Orchestra.

The Dutch Opera produces about 10 repertoires every year, mainly in Amsterdam. Modern opera occupies an important share in the performance repertoire, and there are also some troupes performing operas outside the capital Amsterdam.

The Dutch Music Festival lasts for one month in Amsterdam every June. Another important festival is the Dutch Early Music Festival in Utrecht, which features medieval and baroque music by prominent musicians and ensembles from the Netherlands and abroad.

There are internationally renowned music centres in major cities, such as the Beam Studio in Amsterdam. The North Sea Jazz Festival is held annually in The Hague and is the largest and most famous jazz festival in Europe. The performances of female saxophonist Dorfer and the pop band Urban Dance Team were sold out both at home and abroad. From the beginning of the year to the end of the year, there are continuous large-scale pop concerts, the most famous of which are: Whitsunday Pop, Park Pop and Dinamore Open Air Pop.

North Sea Jazz Festival

The North Sea Jazz Festival is currently one of the largest jazz festivals in Europe, held every year on the second weekend of July in the Netherlands.

Founded in 1976 by jazz enthusiast Paul Acket, it is held at the Hague Convention Center in the Netherlands. The first scale is 6 performance venues, a total of 30 hours of music performances, 300 performances and about 9,000 audiences. Now the scale has grown to 15 performance venues, 1,200 jazz musicians, and about 70,000 listeners every year.

Since 2000, the sister festival – North Sea Cape Town Jazz Festival is held every March and April in Cape Town, South Africa.

The North Sea Jazz Festival features a variety of musical styles, including New Orleans jazz, swing

(swing), Bop (bop), free jazz (free jazz), fusion jazz (fusion), avant garde jazz (avant garde jazz), electronic jazz (electronic jazz), blues (blues), gospel music (gospel), Funk, soul, hip hop, rhythm and blues, world music and latin.

Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
