How is the relationship between Israel and Syria?
The war in the Middle East is still ongoing, especially in Syria. In addition to the internal confrontation between government forces and armed organizations, external forces are also constantly invading this suffering country. The Israeli air force has carried out another airstrike on targets in Syria on the grounds that it was in retaliation for the attacking militants who had crossed the border into the country from Syria. The Syrian government expressed its dissatisfaction and condemned Israel’s violation of Syria’s territorial sovereignty.
It is worth mentioning that although Israel’s air strike on Syria is a violation, the international community rarely intervenes, because the two countries are still belligerents, and there is no border demarcated, only a ceasefire line. Therefore, Israel’s cross-border attack has not been intercepted. And from a historical point of view, it was Syria that started the war against Israel first. In the eyes of many people, Israel’s air strikes on Syria are unstoppable, and even with Russia’s warnings, it has not stopped Israeli fighter jets from carrying missiles.
According to Israel’s frequent bombing activities, and there are many excellent American fighter jets such as F16 and F35, they can completely destroy the Syrian government forces. However, the targets of the Israeli army are often concentrated on the Iranian military facilities stationed in Syria.
Why is Israel only targeting Iranian targets in Syria and not actively attacking the Syrian authorities, an ally of Iran? There is even news that Israel is deliberately avoiding the Syrian authorities in the bombing operation, let alone taking the initiative to intervene in the strategic operation to overthrow the Syrian authorities. There are three main reasons for Israel to make such a choice:
First, Israel just wanted to warn the Syrian authorities. As far as Israel’s military strength in the relevant region is concerned, neither side of the Syrian confrontation will pose military pressure on it. In this context, Israel does not want to completely destroy the Syrian government but just wants to suppress the local Iranian troops through air strikes, and at the same time warns the Syrian authorities not to get too close to Iran.
Second, Israel is worried that the situation in the region will worsen after the fall of the Syrian government. Israel is close to the territory of Syria. If the Syrian government completely collapses, the country will definitely fall into greater chaos, because the anti-government organizations that oppose the government forces are mixed with a lot of extremism. Once they dominate Syria, This will make the situation in this region even more volatile. And once extremism expands, it will inevitably damage the interests of Israel not far away.
Third, the cost of overthrowing the Syrian government is too high. Wars in the Middle East are often closely related to religious factors, and the influence of religious aspects must be taken into account when starting a war. And once Israel starts a full-scale war against the Syrian government, it is likely to provoke opposition from the Arab world and increase the cost of the war. Therefore, in general, Israel’s approach to the Syrian battlefield is basically a plan of gradually encroaching on it, rather than attacking it with fire.
