Story 70: Armed with Fragrance
Armed with Fragrance
Author: Anonymous
Tang Xuanzong, the sixth emperor of the Tang Dynasty in my country, visited the Hot Spring Palace in the 28th year of Kaiyuan. He met a beautiful girl whose fragrance was so overwhelming that Xuanzong fell in love with her. He took possession of her and named her a noble concubine. This girl was Yang Yuhuan.
At that time, Emperor Tang Ming was over 60 years old and Yang Yuhuan was 26 years old.
Xuanzong was also an enlightened and accomplished monarch in the Tang Dynasty. He was fascinated by Concubine Yang. He later built a fish pond for her, filled it with perfume, and invited her to bathe. Concubine Yang suffered from hyperhidrosis, and her sweat could soak her handkerchief.
Xuanzong felt that her sweat was fragrant, and built an agarwood pavilion for her. Li Bai was once called upon to write a Qing Ping Le poem.
In the poem, “a tree is red and the dew condenses the fragrance”, and “the agarwood pavilion leans on the railing in the north”, which is outstanding enough. A fragrant word.
