Introduce Costa Coffee Company

Costa Coffee is a British coffee shop chain and a subsidiary of Coca-Cola. The company is headquartered in Dunstable, England.

Costa Coffee was founded in London in 1971 by brothers Bruno and Sergio Costa as a wholesale business supplying roasters to Italian food service providers and specialist cafes. Whitbread was acquired in 1995, selling to The Coca-Cola Company in 2019 was valued at £3.9 billion and has grown to 3,401 stores in 31 countries and employs 18,412 people. The business has 2,121 restaurants in the UK, over 6,000 Costa Express outlets and Another 1,280 stores overseas (460 in China).

Coca-Cola has announced its intention to acquire Costa from parent company Whitbread PLC for $5.1 billion. The deal, which closed on January 3, 2019, makes Coca-Cola a strong coffee platform in many parts of Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa [3] , the world’s second largest coffee shop network and the largest. The best in the UK.

In 2020, Coca-Cola launched Costa Coffee canned coffee. Canned coffee is available in several stores, including Sainsbury’s and Asda. Unlike coffee shop coffee, it recommends chilled drinking and claims to have 30 percent less sugar than other chilled coffees.

History

Brothers Bruno and Sergio Costa founded a coffee roaster in Lambeth, London in 1971, supplying local caterers. The family moved to England from Parma, Italy in 1960. Costa branched out in the 1960s by selling coffee. It opened in 1978 when it first opened at Vauxhall Bridge Road in London.

In 1985 Sergio acquired Bruno’s shares. Bruno found the tableware company. In 1995 the chain had 41 stores in the United Kingdom and was acquired by Whitbread, who was also the sole proprietor of the United Kingdom. The UK’s largest hotel and coffee operator, 2009 Costa opened its 1,000th store in Cardiff. In December 2009, Costa Coffee agreed to acquire the Polish chain Coffeeheaven for £36 million, adding more stores. 79 locations in Central and Eastern Europe.

In 2018, Whitbread faced pressure from two of its largest shareholders, activist group Elliott Advisers and hedge fund Sachem Head, to sell or discount Costa Coffee, the theory that each business would be worth more than a single company. On April 25, 2018, Whitbread announced its intention to fully overthrow Costa within two years. Coca-Cola subsequently announced an agreement to purchase the chain on January 3. 2019 The Coca-Cola Company completes its $4.9 billion acquisition of Costa Coffee from Whitbread.

On November 20, 2019, Costa Coffee announced that Dominic Enough will step down as CEO of the company and will be succeeded by Jill McDonald.

In March 2020, all coffee shops in the UK will be forced to close indefinitely due to being released all over the country Government-recommended rules aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19 At the end of May, some outlets are open for take-out only, while many others are open for drive-thru.

Costa Coffee moved its own roaster from Lambeth to Basildon, Essex in May 2017 with an investment of £38 million, increasing its roasting capacity from 11,000 to 45,000 tonnes of coffee beans per year.

Costa Coffee hired Gennaro Pelliccia as a coffee taster whose tongue was insured for £10 million with Lloyd’s of London in 2009].

The first Costa outlet outside the UK opened in the UAE in 1999 in September 2017, it became the first coffee shop worldwide to begin delivering coffee via drones to customers sunbathing on Dubai’s beaches.

Following Whitbread’s £59.5 million acquisition of Coffee Nation, the coffee maker chain has been renamed Costa Express. In Denmark, Costa Express machines are located in Shell stations. Costa Express was previously available at Shell locations in Canada. In the UK, grocery chain SPAR has become a major operator of gas station stores, most of which are equipped with Costa Express machines.
