Festival Information

Hinokuni Festival It is a community summer festival held in the heart of Kumamoto City. The first day started with the opening ceremony. Numerous events and food booths are held in various commercial districts in the city throughout the festival. Suitable for people of all ages, on the second day, which is the main ceremony, the “Otemoyan Dance” is held where the townspeople come to enjoy it.

This “Otemoyan Dance” is an ancient Kumamoto folk song dance that began about 80 years ago. It is still popular and is being mixed up with new styles. (The bell as the Shinkansen departs from Kumamoto Station is adapted from this “Otemoyan” song.) And during the dance held on the last day of the festival, The city will adjust the area along the tram to become a pedestrian street.

Let people dance “Otemoyan” and watch “Samba Otemoyan” playfully with the beautiful Kumamoto Castle in the background.

Things to do

1. Participate in the “Otemoyan” dance

About 5,000 people participate in the “Ote Moyan Dance” every year. And allow tourists to participate too! which can be attended from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Participants are also recruited. “Ote Moyan Dance” at the registration point on the day of the event, 100 people can attend a basic dance course from a teacher. The staff will determine the place and time later. For participants in this format will receive a tenugui handkerchief and an original pattern fan

2. Test Your Guts in the Haunted House for Kids

You may feel chilly in the middle of the summer. Before and after the Hinokuni Festival is held. “Children’s Haunted House”, although intended to do for children But the interior has been designed so seriously that it attracts overwhelming attention. Held in the Art Loft of the Kumamoto City Museum of Contemporary Art.

Rules & Manners（参加のルール＆マナー）

Can freely wear clothes to join the dance And may also be performed using props (parades, balloons, banners, etc.), but within the event space will be a tram passing through. Be careful not to let the device touch the tram. This is because there is a danger of short-circuit current. Do not use equipment as tall as a tram wire (about 5 meters).

Generally, dancing is not fixed. But should avoid dancing, interrupting others, or backward. as it may be dangerous. Smoking and drinking are strictly prohibited in the venue. Do not take pictures with drone cameras at the event.
