Father’s Grassland and Mother’s River (2023) 父亲的草原母亲的河 Episode 1 Recap & Review
Episode 1: The joys and sorrows of the Mo family
All gray bricks and mahogany, a two-storey small building with a combination of Chinese and Western. It used to belong to the Mo family, but now the windows and doors are closed. The owner of the house lives in a storage room of a few square meters next to it. The family of six seems crowded and lively. What is crowded is the space and what is noisy is the quarrel. Over time, the old edges and corners have been smoothed away.
The eldest brother Mo Zhixiang has been stationed in Inner Mongolia for many years, and the number of times he goes home to visit relatives is very few. Among the children, only the second Mo Chengming, the third Mo Sangzi, and the youngest Mo Qingshan are left. However, Mo Qingshan was born with poor development, and because he did not keep up with his nutrition, his development was slower than other children, and his two lung lobes had lost most of their functions, so he might not have much time left.
Mother Yu Ping listened to the doctor’s words, and led Mo Qingshan back without saying a word, only to find that the door of the house was full of people, all of whom were idle and watching the excitement. Without exception, his father, Mo Dao, regretted his own career and wanted his son to inherit his father’s career and learn cello. Unfortunately, Mo Chengming was not interested in music, and a fierce quarrel broke out between the father and son.
Because Mo Chengming disobeyed his father in public and showed impatience, Yu Ping rushed up and slapped him. Although it saved her husband’s face, it also made her family a joke. As a result, the quarrel ended hastily, the neighbors dispersed one after another, and the atmosphere at home returned to a seemingly harmonious stage, with a simple meal, clear soup and little water, and relying on the servant Zhu Ma for everything.
The third sister, Mo Sangzi, is a student at a middle school in Nanning City. She often pretends to be an overseas Chinese and visits foreign guest restaurants. The police received the news and closely monitored Mo Sangzi’s every move, until she reappeared and caught her. Bao Guobin, the secretary of the Revolutionary Committee of Xiaohuowaxiang Street, came to find her personally, and Mo Sangzi was also very grateful to him.
Afterwards, Bao Guobin personally sent Mo Sangzi home, and told them to be prepared. The city ordered each family to keep only one child, and the others had to go to the mountains and go to the countryside. After Bao Guobin left, the parents criticized their daughter, and they inevitably had some quarrels, which made Zhu Ma’s daughter Yuzhen extremely unhappy, and directly accused the family of disturbing the people.
Ten years have been like a day, and various conflicts have been staged every day, and Mo Chengming feels annoyed by this. In Mo Chengming’s memory, his father always showed his majesty to others, but with the growth of age and the baptism of the years, his majesty has long been curled up in a corner of the huge mansion, which is particularly ridiculous. The mother is still cold and unsmiling, and has not become friendly because of the changes in living conditions.
Mo Chengming can’t understand that she can tolerate his father’s posturing and sternness. He once swore that he would never become a person like his father. However, this chaotic and noisy place made me more and more like my father, with a strong desire to escape from this place of right and wrong, and escape from this annoying city.
Yuzhen persuaded Mo Chengming to report the life problems of his family, completely cut off contact with the old life, and draw a clear line with the reactionary family, otherwise he would never be able to go to school and join the Communist Youth League. Mo Chengming and Yuzhen are in frequent contact, and their relationship with each other has sprouted during this period. It is secretive and cautious, and for Mo Chengming, it is mixed with more complicated thoughts.
It was rare for the whole family to have a sumptuous lunch. Unexpectedly, the police suddenly came to inform Mo Zhixiang that a crowd had gathered to fight in Inner Mongolia, and he accidentally killed someone and fled in fear of crime. The festive atmosphere fell to the bottom in an instant. Although the parents didn’t believe that the eldest son would kill someone, the organization had already defined him, and there was no room for slowing down.
Mo Chengming was able to leave this home and sign up to be the first batch of young people to go to the mountains and the countryside. At the time of parting, Mo Qingshan and Mo Chengming sat on the roof, watching the moonlight and chatting about the distance, he longed for the vast world, breathing freely, and was finally trapped in a narrow cage, wishing the second brother to take his hope and go far away foreign land. Mo Sangzi has ambitions and aspirations and hopes to go to school to become a female soldier.
She made friends with the son of a cadre at school, but the other party only knew how to make big cakes and never fulfilled her promise. It was also because Mo Sangzi realized that the other party was unreliable, so she simply went to Bao Guobin for help. Unexpectedly, Bao Guobin coveted her beauty for a long time, and finally she committed herself to this man called uncle for her future.
