In this episode, one of the most important meditation chapters, namely the 16 steps of Anapanasati, will be discussed in this chapter in order for those who are interested in meditation. understand the practice and know the principles that the Buddha has said more clearly
Anapanasati, these 16 stages, are rarely heard by the general practitioner. But it is one of the most important sutras. which the Buddha said in Anapanasati Sutra Anapanasati Meditation or Anapanasati Meditation that we have heard in general It is only the first four stages of Anapanasati, of which these four stages of Anapanasati are found in many sutras such as
- Anapanasati in Anussati 10
- Anapanasati in the Mahasatipatthana Sutta
The aforementioned sutras all mention only four levels of Anapanasati, but the Anapanasati meditation in Anapanasati is the most complete. because showing evidence in both and the most complete in practice about Anapanasati starting from the beginning to the highest level in Buddhism
The 16 steps of Anapanasati are
1. When we breathe in and out long, we know that we are breathing in and out long.
2. When breathing in and out shortly, we know that we are breathing in and out short.
3. Knowing the whole body, breathing in and out.
4. to stop the body inhale-exhale
5. Determine the rapture, breathing in and out.
6. Determining happiness, breathing in and out
7. Determining the knowledge of the body inhale-exhale
8. to suppress the mind inhale-exhale
9. Determine mental awareness, breathing in and out.
10. Make the mind rejoice inhale-exhale
11. Make your mind concentrate. inhale-exhale
12. Relax your mind, breathe in and out.
13. Seeing Impermanence – Impermanence inhale-exhale
14. As seen in Viraga – Fading away (relaxation), breathing in and out.
15. According to Nirodha – cessation without rest (complete cessation), breathing in and out.
16. According to the patinissakha – giving back (letting go), breathing in and out.
These is the 16 steps of Anapanasati according to the Anapanasati Sutta. in the Book of the Middle Ages The following will describe each step in order. In order for the interested person to better understand the principles of practice in these 16 steps of Anapanasati, they are divided into 4 sections as follows:
Section 1, from the 1st stage to the 4th stage, deals with the determination of breathing in and out as Kayanupassana Satipatthana.
Section 2, from the 5th to the 8th stage, deals with the determination of feelings as vedananupassana satipatthana.
Section 3, from the 9th to the 12th stage, deals with the determination of the mind as Cittanupassana Satipatthana.
Section 4, from the 13th to the 16th stage, deals with the determination of the Dhamma that appears in the mind as Dhammanupassana Satipatthana.
The four foundations of mindfulness also appear in this Anapanasati Sutta. in the body of mindfulness from step 1 to 4. We practice Anapanasati in general. But some of you may not yet know exactly at what stage of these four stages they are practicing.
