The Mystery of the Shooting of French President Mitterrand

François Mitterrand (1916-1996) is one of the greatest politicians in French history. He was re-elected as French president for two terms between 1981 and 1995, creating several political records, and even many records are still unmanned. Can surpass, known as the evergreen tree of French politics.

His life is full of legends. He was diagnosed with cancer just six months after he became president, but he strictly kept secrets and fought against the disease for 13 and a half years, becoming a unique landscape in the French political world.

However, before he was elected president, there was one thing that greatly hit his stickiness and even affected his political career, which was the famous shooting incident in Observatory Park. To this day, the truth of this incident still confuses people.

On October 15, 1959, the front page of the “Paris News” published shocking news: The extreme colonialists were preparing to assassinate a group of people who advocated a negotiated solution to the Algerian problem. The assassination team had crossed the Spanish border. Assassination. The personnel of Zhong-have been identified, and the operation may take place tomorrow.

Unexpectedly, that night, when Mitterrand, then a French senator, was on his way home after a dinner with several friends, a tragedy happened. The car drove forward for a while, and Mitterrand suddenly felt that something was wrong. He looked around and saw a black sedan closely following his car: Mitterrand became nervous, remembering the newspaper this morning. The news and the recent rumors, he immediately drove in circles with the black car, but he couldn’t shake it off no matter how hard it was.

So, he made a quick decision and drove the car to the Observatory Park on the south side of the Senate. Then he quickly jumped out of the car, climbed over the iron fence of the park very quickly, and secretly hid in the flowers. In an instant, there was a series of gunshots coming from behind him. Later, when people checked his car, they found that the car was covered with at least seven bullet holes.

The next day, news of Mitterrand’s attack quickly spread throughout Paris. Major newspapers, people in the streets and alleys are talking about this, and thinking of the news in the newspaper yesterday, the murderer must be an extreme colonialist, and Mitterrand is on the blacklist of their special forces.

In an instant, letters of condolences and solidarity floated to the parliament, and people called Mitterrand a hero. It seems that the incident has been very clear, and there is no need to pursue it. But surprisingly, things turned around a week later.

On the 22nd, right-wing congressman Robert Pesquet told reporters that the attack on Mitterrand was a political scandal planned by Mitterrand himself and executed by Pesquet.

Before the incident, Mitterrand wrote two letters to Pesquet, one was sent to Paris by “pending mail”, and the other was a registered letter and sent to Pesquet’s residence. In addition to correspondence, Mitterrand met with Pesquet three times in private before the action, and they agreed on the course of action and the way of action.

On the night of the incident, Pesquet followed Mitterrand’s arrangement. When he arrived at the Observatory Park, he confirmed that Mitterrand was no longer in the car, and then ordered his accomplice Abel Dauron to shoot.

According to Pesquet, it was indeed a political conspiracy that Mitterrand used the attack to win the support of everyone, and the Observatory Park incident naturally became Mitterrand’s “bitter tactic” to gain his reputation.

When people interviewed Mitterrand for this, he expressed strong disapproval, but could not come up with strong evidence like Pesquet.

He said he did see Pesquet before the incident, when Pesquet came to him quietly and told him to be careful because Mitterrand was at the top of the kill list.

Mitterrand also said that Pesquet had advised himself that if he found that the car was being followed, he should not drive home and it would be safer to flee to the Observatory Park. In addition, Pesquet also asked Mitterrand to keep the information he provided confidential, and if something happened, don’t report it to the police.

Therefore, after the incident, Mitterrand did not tell anyone and did not call the police. Mitterrand was sure to keep his promise, but he was at a loss because of Pesquet’s first attack.

After Pesquet’s statement came out, Mitterrand’s status in people’s minds began to decline. He quickly changed from a hero to a political liar, becoming the target of political enemies, and even many friends left him.

Before this incident, Mitterrand’s political views had been opposed to French President Charles de Gaulle, so the relationship with de Gaulle was very tense.

In January 1959, Charles de Gaulle became the fifth president of the French Republic, and Mitterrand’s political career began to enter a low point. He first lost the advantage that he had accumulated as a minister for seven years, and then in the National Assembly election, he again He lost his re-election seat and became a senator again.

However, de Gaulle’s first prime minister, Michel Debre, did not let Mitterrand go. He wanted to make up for it after Mitterrand’s knife, so he proposed to the Senate to cancel Mitterrand’s immunity. At that time, when the Senate discussed the matter, Mitterrand angrily accused the government of being the mastermind and accomplice of the scandal.

According to records, Pesquet had intimidated the prime minister a month before the incident, and it was not until the prime minister reported the director of national security that Pesquet stopped pestering. In this incident, Pesquet also used the same method, but Mitterrand believed him too credulously, and he had a loophole to take advantage of.

After the Senate’s discussion, it was voted to suspend Mitterrand’s immunity. Mitterrand suffered a great blow, including spiritual. As a result, he was almost cornered and had to start a lawyer again.

Until after Mitterrand’s death, when his wife recalled the incident with the observatory, he said sadly: “People’s desire to end his slaughter did not come true, but it broke him spiritually.”

The mystery of this strange Observatory Park sneak attack has not been solved until today, but it has become more complicated.

Mitterrand kept saying that someone was going to put him to death, that someone was going to discredit him. Pesquet’s testimony also kept changing, and on November 4, 1959, Pesquet was arrested on charges of involvement in the parliamentary bombing. A few years after his arrest, he confessed that the people behind the shooting at the Observatory Park were de Gaulles.

However, he has not produced evidence, so people are also skeptical of this claim. Those who support Mitterrand believe that this incident was manipulated by the intelligence services of the de Gaulle faction, and they want to politically eliminate the opponents left over from the Fourth Republic, and Mitterrand is one of them.

Whether Mitterrand was really attacked, framed by others, or just a “bitter tactic” made by himself, it is impossible to know.
