Features of Rococo Architecture

Generally speaking, Rococo architecture refers to the artistic style of interior decoration. The Rococo architectural style is mainly based on the interesting combination of shell and Baroque style. The interior uses bright colors and delicate decoration, and the furniture is also very delicate and biased. It is cumbersome, not as strong in color as in the Baroque style, and the decoration is rich.

The French Rococo style, which originated in the 1720s, was developed on the basis of Baroque architecture. Rococo itself is not an architectural style, but more of an interior decoration art. Indoor wainscots are sometimes made of wood, sometimes made of delicate sashes, with a circle of lace around the frame, often lined with light-colored oriental brocade.

Rococo architectural art is characterized by light-structured garden-style mansions, which gradually abandoned the majestic palace temperament of the Baroque. Here, individuals can develop freely without being disturbed by the vaunted court society. For example, names such as Xiaoyao Palace or View Tower indicate the private character of these mansions.

Prince Eugene’s Garden Palace is a rhythmic whole, composed of seven symmetrically arranged pavilion-like buildings, and its folded penthouse roof spreads beautifully and symmetrically from the middle to the domes of the four turrets. The single-storey main hall with the gable above has almost middle-class comfort, and the two wide double-storey side wings show the opulence of the owner without the arrogance of the princes.

Two single-storey buildings of moderate width are placed between the tower-like pavilions, and the majesty of the pavilion gives the whole building the character of a solid castle – in short, very different architectural ideas, but unified in an elegant inner connection . It is this casual disposition of architectural groups with almost contradictory forms and styles that clearly embodies the spirit of Rococo art.
