Since ancient times, our ancestors have revered and cherished Jangseung, worshiping him as a guardian deity that protects the village. Therefore, people offered rice cakes or alcohol to Jangseung and prayed for their safety and for protection from harm. It is said that if you touch a jangseung, you will suffer great harm. One day, a poor traveler was on his way to a village and saw that the road was muddy, so he got angry and happened to see a jangseung nearby. Jangseung, who had been attacked by this, was upset and was just boiling inside. Fortunately, after a while, a good-hearted scholar was walking along the road and saw the jangseung stuck in the mud. He was startled and felt pity for him. He hurried to the mud, didn’t care that his clothes got dirty, raised the jangseung, put it back in place, and held the jangseung’s face. After wiping it down, I set it up on a stand and went on my way.

The jangseung was grateful to the kind-hearted scholar who helped him, but he was so angry at the stranger who had touched him in the first place that he could not overcome his anger and ran to Heukseok-dong, Gwacheon, where the jangseungs headquarters was located, to appeal to Daebang.

When the jangseung who had been embezzled told his situation and said that he wanted to complain to Daebang about his unfairness, Daebang Jangseung readily allowed the jangseung to complain.

When the jangseung cried loudly in front of the daebang, revealing the full story of what had happened to him and asking the wicked man to give him a big mask, the jangseung in the daebang was also boiling and angry at the foolish traveler who challenged the authority of the jangseungs, but decided that he was not the kind of man who should suffer.

He sighed and shook his head. Daebang, who had sent a large mask and told him that he was not the type of person to listen to, instead told the good scholar who helped the jangseung that he would send Tal in place of the bad guy to get rid of the evil, so he told the scholar to get something to eat and lighten his mood. I comforted him. Jangseung was upset, but ultimately decided to follow Daebang’s orders.

In the end, the naughty traveler was safe, and the good scholar who helped the jangseung suffered greatly and was in extreme pain. He thought it was no good, so he hurriedly prepared some food and prayed to the jangseung who helped him, and was only able to escape. In any case, Jangseung felt very sorry for the grateful scholar, so he earnestly asked Daebang to bestow a great blessing on the scholar’s family and the scholar, and Daebang bestowed the greatest blessing on the good scholar after misfortune. From then on, the scholar’s family did well in everything they did and served the jangseungs with even greater sincerity.
