Kamakura City, Japan

Kamakura is a seaside town not far from Tokyo. Kamakura is a city in Kanagawa Ken. It is only 1 hour away from Tokyo. This is Shonan area where Kamakura are located and is known as Pacific Ocean beaches and attractions near the sea. Kamakura is a historical site surrounded on 3 sides by hills and facing the ocean at its front. There are many famous tourist spots like Kohtoku-in and the bamboo forest of Houkoku-ji. There is also the Komachi Dori Street pedestrian street and many older temples.

Engakuji Temple

Engakuji Temple is not far from Kita-kamakura station. You can walking up from the station to temple. You will find a large ancient wooden pavilion which stands out beautifully. The Engakuji Temple is a Zen Buddhist temple that remains in Kamakura who created in dedication to those who died during the Mongol invasion in the area of ​​the Sariden. Shariden is enshrined with Buddha images and the stone Buddha statue is located here. All are beautiful even though the stone. Buddha statues will decay over time when walking continuously and you will find a bell that is up to 2.5 meters high in the shady temple grounds. At the back there is a Japanese garden. You can walk in and see beauty gardening like art decorate.

Kenchoji Temple

Kenchoji Temple is 10-15 minutes walk from Kita-Kamakura Station along with small road and many small shrines are around. Kenchoji Temple is the largest and most important temple in Kamakura. There are 49 pavilions temples in the temple grounds but many of them have been damaged by fire. The large pavilion was made of wood. At the front of the pavilion was cherry blossoms. When the cherry blossom season is more beautiful with nice atmosphere around the temple. On the right side of the Sanmon Gate is a large bell with the first abbot’s handwriting appearing. At the back of the temple is a hundred-year-old cedar pine tree which believed that the first abbot was a grower.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is near Kenchoji Temple. It’s shortly walk down to the side at the entrance of shrine. It can be said about 3 3 minutes walk from Kamakura Station. You will find a large red Torii gate then walk for 10-15 minutes along the way to enter the shrine with cherry blossoms on both sides (during the season) and Japanese lanterns hanging along the way.

Kamakura Daibutsu, Great Buddha

Tickets must be purchased at the entrance in front of the temple. When you entering the gate will find a group of green pine trees that look comfortable before reaching the courtyard. This Buddha statue is Amida Nyoyurai Buddha is inside Kotoku-in Temple which have the whole bronze. Buddha statue was completed in 1795 with a long life from wind through rain and very snowy, oxidative layer reaction but make the Buddha green as originally. The Buddha was made of wood enshrined in the temple but encountered in storm until damage was made and the Lord Buddha at that time was rebuilt but still encountered many natural disasters. This Buddha still stands in the same place until being respected by the faith of people.

Hasedera Temple or Great Kannon

Hasedera Temple is a short walk from the Big Buddha temple. In front of the temple is a large red lamp. At the temple will see Japanese garden before go up to see the Guanyin. You must visit Jiso. Jiso is a thousand stone idols and was created in honor of the deceased baby. There is a red bib and wool hat be worn on the idol. When you walk up to the sanctuary then will see the Guan Yin Goddess. This will find various Buddha statues and located in many other places inside the temple. You will find Guan Yin carved from wood covered with gold and face. The statutes is 9.18 meters height and is largest in Japan.

By Train:

  • You can get to Kamakura by train from Tokyo at Shinjuku Station by use Odakyu Railway to reach at Kamakura Station. (About 55-65 mins)
