Among the widely circulated Tibetan folk tales, there is a legend about the Himalayas: “A long, long time ago, there was an endless sea here. The waves rolled up and beat against the coast covered with pine, cypress, hemlock and palm trees, making a rustling sound.
Above the forest, the mountains were green and misty; the forest was full of various exotic flowers and plants, herds of spotted deer and antelopes were running, and groups of rhinos, with staggering steps, leisurely drank water by the lake; cuckoos, thrushes and larks, jumping around on the treetops and singing beautiful songs happily; rabbits ran carefree on the green and lush grass… What an attractive picture of peace and stability!
One day, a huge five-headed poisonous dragon suddenly appeared in the sea, messing up the forest, stirring up huge waves, and destroying the flowers and trees. The birds and beasts living here all felt that disaster was coming. They jumped to the east, and the forests in the east collapsed and the grasslands were flooded; they rushed to the west, and the waves in the west were also raging, making it difficult for anyone to breathe.
Just when the birds and beasts were desperate, suddenly, five colorful clouds floated over the sea and turned into the Five Wisdom Dakinis. They came to the seaside, displayed their boundless magic power, and subdued the five-headed poisonous dragon. The demons were conquered, and the sea was calm. The deer, antelopes, monkeys, rabbits, and birds living here bowed down to the fairies and thanked them for saving their lives. The dakinis thought They said goodbye and returned to heaven, but the sentient beings begged them to stay here to benefit them.
So the five fairies showed mercy and agreed to stay and share the peaceful days with the sentient beings. The five fairies ordered the sea to retreat, and then the east became a dense forest, the west became a vast field, the south became a garden with lush flowers and plants, and the north became an endless pasture.
The five fairies turned into the five main peaks of the Himalayas, namely: Xiangshou Fairy Peak, Cuiyan Fairy Peak, Zhenhui Fairy Peak, Guanyong Fairy Peak, and Shiren Fairy Peak, standing on the edge of the southwest, guarding this happy paradise; the Cuiyan Fairy Peak at the head is Mount Everest, which is the highest peak in the world today, and the local people affectionately call it “Goddess Peak”.
Note: The Tibetan Plateau was formed from the sea, which has been proved by more and more scientific investigations and discoveries. However, the plateau was not formed overnight, but changed very slowly. It was only the crust movement in the past few million years that caused the plateau to rise sharply.
The measurement of Mount Everest, the main peak of the Himalayas in recent years has proved that the plateau is still rising. This rising speed is amazing in the history of earth rescue, but it is only one or two centimeters a year.
