Summary:
Half a Lifelong Romance is a Chinese novel by Eileen Chang. It was initially serialized on a Shanghai newspaper Yi Bao in 1948, under the title Eighteen Springs. The novel was published as a book in 1950.
The “Eighteen Springs” is also the performance of Zhang Ailing’s most comfortable urban men and women. The novel recalls the past from the standpoint of the heroine Shen Shizhen, taking the sorrow and joy of Shen Shizhen and Gu Manyu as the axis, describing the love and marriage of several young men and women in the chaos of the world. The goodness and weakness of the world, the infatuation and misfortune of Mann, and the selfishness of Mann, the shamelessness of Zhu Hongcai, are all vivid in the novel. The main characters in the book have experienced the sweetness and bitterness of the troubled times. Finally, they support the new political power and contribute to the reunion of the new country in the Northeast. Although there are lovers who have not become genus, it is regrettable, but they all have their own matches, and they are moving towards new life. The book has a total of eighteen chapters. The male and female protagonists and related figures are also separated from the eighteen springs, which is in line with the old scriptures of the traditional Peking Opera “Luohewan”.
Although the performance of “Eighteen Springs” is a child’s private feelings, it is also obviously entangled in the great historical narrative of the regime’s replacement of the country’s reconstruction. Therefore, it can be said that “Eighteen Springs” is a work that has the inspiration of the times to a certain extent. It is the contrast between the patriarchal desolation, the advocacy of the sectarianism, and Zhang Ailing, who has been committed to the history of miscellaneous smashing, dealing with fictional narratives and historical development in the creation of novels. A new attempt at relationship. Even the commentators believe that “Eighteen Springs” is linked to two eras, linking two Zhang Ailing; one Zhang Yiling and one new Zhang Ailing.
