Biography

Jean-Honore Fragonard was born in Grasse-Maritimes-Alpes in southeastern France. His father was a glove merchant. Due to the failure of speculative trading, Fragonard sent Fragonard to Paris to give him a gift. A notary in the apprentice.

But he showed artistic talent at a young age, and at 18 was introduced to Francois Boucher (1703-1770), who admired his talent but had no time to teach a beginner and sent him to Jean Battista Simon Chardin.

Fragonard studied at Chardin’s studio for 6 months before returning to Boucher, and soon gained Boucher’s trust to paint reproductions of Boucher’s works.

In 1752, Boucher recommended him to compete for a scholarship to study in Rome and sent it to the court painter of Louis XV. Fragonard, although not yet a student of the Academy, still relied on his work “Jeroboam Adoration of Idris” Got a bonus.

On September 17, 1756, he left for the French Academy in Rome. The scenery of Rome had a great influence on him, prompting him to form a dreamy painting style in the future, and at the same time, he was influenced by the Italian painter Thiepolo when he visited Venice.

In 1761, he returned to Paris, and in 1765 he was accepted by the academy as his work was greatly appreciated by Diderot and bought by the king.

In 1762, Fragonard showed his talent for painting by accident. Saint Julian asked his colleague Doyan to paint a picture of a young girl on a swing. This amateur art lover hopes that the girl in the painting can be dressed by a bishop, and that he himself can glimpse the spring light of the girl’s skirt because of the swing.

This request was rejected by Doyen on the grounds of corrupting social morals, but Doyen therefore recommended Fragonard to St. Julian. In the same year, with a slight modification of the protagonist and artistic conception, Faggona completed Les hasards heureux de l’escarpolette (Les hasards heureux de l’escarpolette), which became one of his famous works in the Rococo style.

In 1778, Fragonard completed “Le Verrou” (Le Verrou), adding a large number of hints and careful layout to each figure and object in the painting; and using dim light to add mystery to eroticism. However, the diagonal composition of the picture leaves a lot of controversy for future generations in terms of the balance of the picture.

In the past, Fragonard’s paintings were based on religion and classical stories, but after that, King Louis XV became his main customer. To satisfy the king’s pursuit of pleasure, his paintings basically focused on luxury, pleasure and lust. This became the main theme of his paintings throughout the rest of his life. The colors he uses are gorgeous, the brushstrokes are brisk, and the subject is sometimes encompassed by oval decorations, like looking through a keyhole into a secret room.

After the French Revolution, the royal family was overthrown, Fragonard lost his backer, and in 1793 he fled back to his hometown and took refuge at a friend’s house. At this time he painted a series of decorative paintings called “The Romance of Young Lovers”.

He returned to Paris in the early 19th century and died in obscurity in 1806.

For almost half a century later, he was not remembered, and he was not mentioned in Sheshkov’s “History of Art” in 1873. But in the last 30 years of the 19th century, he regained his reputation as a master, with a sketch of him in 1905, valued at $190,000.
