Anti-inflammation diet

Apart from Covid-19 vaccination, certain foods may help fight against coronavirus during the outbreak. Some supplements have become a cost-effective option to control and mitigate Covid-19 infection.

The recent research into the role of anti-inflammatory food in fighting against Covid-19 by Victoria Ling and Dr. Ioannis Zabetakis, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Limerick, Ireland, published in Diseases shows that anti-inflammatory foods help relieve severely acute respiratory symptoms and reduce the severity of Covid-19. Inflammation is the body’s response to an offending agent (like viruses, bacteria or toxic chemicals) or suffers an injury.

Coronavirus infection produces an excessive secretion of cytokines, perceived as “cytokine storm”, a condition in which an immune system malfunctions, causing many cells in the body to be damaged or severely inflamed until it reaches the internal organ system failure, or even death.

Anti-inflammation diet which helps inhibit the cytokines production that causes inflammation in the body includes foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish, vegetable oil, nuts, seeds, and green leaves. The vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables, like berries, oranges, and sweet peppers, provide phytonutrients that can reduce the effects of inflammation. They are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants that inhibit and slow down the oxidative reactions that cause cell damage. Mushrooms, salmon, sardines, tuna, cod liver oil, and egg yolks are all rich in vitamin D and are antiviral.

They help boost immunity. Furthermore, foods containing zinc, an essential mineral to Cytotoxic T Cells, which is found in high protein meats, seafood, and vegetables likes spinach, potatoes, and tomatoes, can enhance an inflammatory response and in the meantime reduce the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection. By contrast, certain foods that increase insulin and stimulate cytokine can lead to an increase in inflammation.

These include processed foods such as sweets, sugary drinks, refined crabs, fried foods with trans fat, like cakes, cookies, pies, popcorn, and donuts. These foods worsen an intestinal balance and gut bacteria, causing endotoxin in the bloodstream, and finally triggering an increased inflammatory response.

Anti-inflammation diet, however, has not been proven to prevent inflammation from the Covid-19 infection. Although some supplements have a beneficial effect on respiratory tract infections, for example, reduce inflammation duration of an ICU admission and infection period, it still has not been confirmed that taking supplements or nutrients can help prevent severe inflammation in people with Covid-19.
