France’s total population exceeds 67 million in 2019

The French Republic (referred to as “France”) is a semi-presidential republic located in Western Europe and its overseas territories include some areas of South America and the South Pacific.
France has become one of the great powers in Europe since the end of the Middle Ages. It reached the heyday of feudal society during the reign of Louis XIV in the 17th and 18th centuries. After the French Revolution broke out in 1789, it overthrew the autocratic monarchy and experienced two empires and three republics successively. National strength reached its peak in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Before the Second World War, France was the second largest colonial empire in the world at that time, with a colony area equal to 20 times that of the mainland, making it the most densely populated country in the 20th century. It was replaced by the Fifth Republic established by Charles de Gaulle.
France is bordered on three sides by the sea and is the largest country in western Europe. Divided into regions, provinces and municipalities. Provinces have prefectures and counties, but not administrative regions. Counties are judicial and electoral units. France is divided into 22 regions, 96 provinces, 4 overseas provinces, 4 overseas territories, and 2 local administrative regions with special status.
There are 36,565 cities and towns nationwide, of which 34,000 have a population of less than 3,500, 231 cities have a population of over 30,000, and 37 have a population of more than 100,000.
France is a country dominated by the French nation. In addition to the main French, there are also ethnic minorities such as Alsatian, Breton, Corsican, Flemish, Catalan and Basque in the border area. People and other local ethnic groups account for about 7.9% of the total population. France also has about 8 percent of its population of foreign immigrants from Africa and Europe. There are 46 million French people, accounting for 83% of the country’s total population.
64% of the residents believe in Catholicism, 3% believe in Islam, 3% believe in Protestantism, 1% believe in Judaism, and 28% say they have no religion. (2009 “Cross” survey data)
There are 1.4 million Alsatians, accounting for 2.7% of the country’s population. Living in the Alsace and Lorraine regions close to Germany, there are 1.1 million Bretons, accounting for about 2% of the country’s population, distributed in the Brittany Peninsula in western France. There are 280,000 Corsicans, or 0.5% of the country’s population. In addition, there are 250,000 Flemish people in France, distributed in the north near the Belgian cities of Dunkirk and Azbrook.
There are 250,000 Catalans living on the border between the southern end of the Pyrenees and Spain. 130,000 Basques live in the Atlantic Pyrenees province on the southwest border with Spain. Among the 4 million foreign immigrants in France today, the largest proportion of immigrants is in Corsica, and Paris has nearly 1.5 million foreigners.
