School history
The school was founded in 1880. Originally a Christian university. The “vrije” in the school’s name means “separation from religion and state”, reflecting the belief in the pursuit of academic neutrality.
In 1905 the VU was given the same rights as the public university and set a development timetable to expand it into a full university with all “classical” departments: in 1930 the VU should have at least 4 faculties, In 1950 there should be 5 colleges. In 1930, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics was established as the fourth faculty. In 1950, the Faculty of Medicine was established. Since 1970, VU has received equal funding with other public universities.
Although VU is no longer a Christian-only university, until the 1970s its seminary had strong ties to the Dutch Reformed Church. For example, an independent representative body has been established in the church to manage the relationship between the church and VU Theological Seminary.
Since 1990, the school has adopted the griffin as its logo. It has the body of a lion, the head and wings of an eagle, and the ears of a horse, representing the values pursued by the school: the unfolded wings represent the pursuit of knowledge in a free academic atmosphere; the feet are firmly planted on the ground, representing the school Hope to contribute to the improvement of social well-being.
The school emblem is “Girl in the Garden”, chosen by the university’s founder, Abraham Kuyper, to depict the scene of a teenage girl living freely in the garden. The finger points to God, expressing prayer for the grace of God.
