What are the schools of yoga in India?

After thousands of years of development and evolution, yoga has derived many sects.

Orthodox Indian “classical yoga” includes six systems of wisdom yoga, karma yoga, hatha yoga, king yoga, and kundalini yoga. The theories of different schools of yoga are very different.

1. Tantric Yoga

Yoga in the most primitive sense mainly focuses on the practice of the inner mind. At that time, yoga was mainly practiced by meditation, meditation, and ascetic practices.

Tantric yoga is characterized by complex mandala patterns (Yantra), detailed religious rituals, and content that is not open to the public. It is not a religion, nor a superstition, nor is it a utopian theory of empty words. Ninety percent of Tantra is a practical science, and the theory exists to verify and support practical training.

2. Karma, Wisdom Yoga

Karma Yoga and Wisdom Yoga did not become popular until the 8th century BC to the 5th century BC.

The original meaning of karma yoga refers to the action itself, not the “karma” that occurs after the action. As such, karma yoga is sometimes referred to as “action yoga,” “action yoga,” or “karma yoga.”

The purpose of the school of wisdom yoga is to promote the cultivation of knowledge concepts, to liberate from ignorance, to achieve divine knowledge, and to look forward to unity with Brahman. Advocating civilization and wisdom is also one of the important members or groups of Hindu wise men in ancient India.

3. Tando Yoga

Tando Yoga belongs to a kind of modern classical yoga. The main practice method is to run the sexual energy inward and upward and recycle it, so as to awaken the awakening yoga system of the energy in the human body. With the birth of the yoga classics “Bhagavad-gita” and “Yoga Sutra”, Raja Yoga and Bhakti Yoga were born.

4. Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga

Raja Yoga means a yogic practice with a high status like a king. Raja Yoga emphasizes meditation and pranayama, and is the mainstream way for Hindu practitioners in India to lead to the spiritual world.

Bhakti Yoga, simply put, is “awakening the sleeping Krishna consciousness of living beings.” By doing bhakti service wholeheartedly in any situation, one can immediately transcend the natural attributes of matter and reach the level of Brahman.

5. Hatha yoga

Hatha Yoga is also known as traditional yoga. In the word Hatha, “ha” (ha) means the sun and “he” (ta) means the moon. It represents the balance of two opposites, male and female, day and night, yin and yang, cold and heat, and anything else that complements each other.

For example, Ananda Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Hot Yoga, etc., which are popular in gyms, all belong to Hatha’s yoga school.

6. Kundalini

Also known as snake king yoga. Kundalini proves that there are 72,000 energy channels around the human body, the seven Brahma chakras, a main channel and a holy snake that has not been awakened but is dormant. By opening the air channels, the breath of life awakens the snake, so that he passes through all the Brahma chakras and reaches the body. Once the Kundalini snake rushes out of the Brahma chakras above its head, it is possible to obtain the transcendent samadhi.

There are very few people who practice kundalini yoga now, because kundalini is very demanding of people, and yogis who have practiced it for decades have not achieved any supernatural power or samadhi state. Kundalini Yoga is one of the more difficult methods of yoga, and strength can only be gained by persevering.

7. Ashtanga

In Patanjali’s “Yoga Sutra”, eight-branch yoga is also known as Astangha Yoga, which is the oldest yoga practice system.

Ashtanga Yoga is a rigorous practice. At present, the popular practice in the world was founded by Indian yogi Pattabbi Jois. Ashtanga Yoga is divided into three levels: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. The choreography of each level is fixed, starting with 5 times of Sun Prayer A and B, with a lot of asana practice in between, and ending with handstand and rest. The purpose of this continuous movement practice is to consume a lot of calories to cleanse the body and expel toxins.

Ashtanga Yoga develops the body’s strength, flexibility and stamina in a balanced way. Many fitness enthusiasts in Europe and the United States are keen on this. In the West, this kind of yoga is also called “power yoga”.

At present, some domestic yoga studios have opened Ashtanga yoga courses, which are popular among young people, but most of them are beginners.
