Introduction to Chateau Latour

Chateau Latour is a French national treasure winery located on a relatively high gravel river bank in the south of the village of Pauillac in Bordeaux . The winery has 107.5 acres of vineyards and the average age of the plants is 35 years. The estate grows about 10,000 grapes per hectare and produces about 20,000 cases of wine annually. Château Latour is also one of the first wineries to be classified in the 1855 classification system.
Château Latour was first recorded in the 14th century. In 1331, Lord Pons ordered Gaucelme de Castillon to build a defensive tower in the parish of Saint Maubert. The Tour de Saint Maubert later became an important fortress guarding the Gironde during the Hundred Years War between England and France. The name of the winery “latour” also comes from this, which means “tower” in French. In the 16th century, the land was leased to grape growers by the owners at the time. Later, the Mullet family gradually took control of the estate until the end of the 17th century.
Later, due to marriage and inheritance, the winery became the property of Alexandre de Segur. Alexandre Segur continued to expand his territory and acquired many wineries in the Médoc region, including the famous Chateau Lafite Rothschild. The arrival of the Ségur family opened a chapter in the wine history of Chateau Latour. In 1718, Nicolas-Alexandre, son of Alexandre Ségur, known as the “Prince des Vignes”, continued to expand the family business, acquiring Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Clarion Plot of Chateau Calon-Segur.

Chateau Latour strictly controls the production of grapes, and in bad years, the grapes after picking are subjected to strict manual screening.
Choose, in this regard, a step above Chateau Lafite. The wine of Chateau Latour is very green when it is just brewed, and it even has a difficult taste. It needs to be aged in the bottle for at least 10 years. For example, vintages like 1945 and 1947 still retain their strength after 50 years and can continue to be brewed.
Château Latour’s wines are consistently strong, full-bodied, with plump blackcurrant aromas and delicate black cherry aromas. Hugh Johnson, a famous British wine taster, said when comparing Chateau Lafayette and Chateau Latour, if Lafayette is a tenor, Latour is a bass, and if Lafayette is a lyric Poetry, Latour is an epic masterpiece.
