Story 109: The Legend of Goddess Guntham Ram Folktales
The Legend of Goddess Guntham Ram
Author: Anonymous
Once upon a time, there was a young man named Gaden in Lhasa. He had been in love with his neighbor’s daughter Qiongji since he was a child. Gadan’s mother thought that Qiongji’s family was poor and powerless, so she wanted to break off the engagement several times. Gadan said: “My grandma likes her son, but she doesn’t like her. My son likes my grandma, but I don’t like her. I will spend this life with her, so let me make the decision!” Then he married Qiongji.
After getting married, my mother tried every means to torture Miss Qiongji, making her do hard work and making her eat leftovers and cold tea. One day, the old woman shouted early: “My son, Gadan, get up! My daughter-in-law, Qiongji, get up! Get up and go to the mountain to chop wood. The son only needs to chop a small bundle, and the wife needs to chop a large bundle before she can go home.”
Qiongji was chopping thornwood, and his hand was pricked by a sharp thorn. He cried and sang:
Ah Peiping, how sad I am,
Alas, how sad I am;
Thorns like the claws of beasts,
Qiongji, I don’t know how to cut. I don’t know how to cut.
After hearing this, Gadan quickly walked over, wiped Qiongji’s tears with his sleeve, and sang:
Qiongji, don’t cry, Qiongjimo is sad,
Qiongji, don’t cry. Qiongji, don’t be sad.
Come and have a rest under the shade of a tree,
Brother, let me cut it for you.
Qiongji lay under the big tree and fell asleep soon. In the Gongtang Temple on the other side of the Lhasa River, there is a Goddess Gongtang Ram. Seeing Gadan’s youth and beauty, she has long wanted to make him her husband. At this time, she transformed into a beautiful lady, appeared next to Gadan with two maids, and said with a smile:
Please listen to it,
Young Awugadan!
Please think about it,
Awugadan youth.
I am not an ordinary woman,
I am the Goddess Gongtang Ram.
Let’s get married, okay?
Can we live together for three years?
If you really can’t get married,
Can we exchange rings?
After Gadan heard this, dark clouds appeared on his face. While chopping wood, he replied:
Please listen to it,
Goddess Gongtang Ram,
Please think about it,
Gongtang Ram Goddess!
I have a wife, Jonji,
I cannot marry you;
I have a wife, Jonji,
cannot live with you;
I have a wife, Jonji,
I can’t hand over the ring to you.
Gongtang Lhamo was very unhappy, pinched Gaden’s nose and said: “Mei Duo Quba Festival (Mei Duo Quba Festival: a festival in Gongtang Monastery on the south bank of the Lhasa River, every year on April 15th in the Tibetan calendar)” Held. Plum blossoms are flowers; Quba are offerings. It can be translated as the Festival of Flowers and Cards for Gods and Buddhas.) Waiting for you!” After saying that, it disappeared like a breeze.
Gadan tied the thornwood into two bundles, one as big as a yak and one as small as a goat. He said to Qiongji: “When you go down the mountain, the big one belongs to me, and the small one belongs to you; when you enter the door, the big one belongs to you, and the small one belongs to me.”
Gadan’s mother stood in the yard, waiting for her son and wife to come back. She grabbed a handful of cow dung ashes in her left hand and a poker in her right hand, and said through gritted teeth: “Daughter-in-law, my wife, if you are lazy, I will sprinkle the ashes into your eyes and hit you on the head with the stick.” Not long after that. , the son’s wife came back carrying firewood. The bundle on the wife’s back was as big as an ox, but the son’s was only as big as a goat. The old woman grinned toothlessly with joy.
The son asked: “Grandma! Grandma! What are you doing with the cow dung ashes in your left hand? What are you doing with the poker in your right hand?” Grandma said, “Hehe! The ashes are sprinkled on the cow dung, and the poker is Used for driving calves.”
The next day, before dawn, the old woman lay on the mat again and shouted: “Son, Gadan, get up! Wife-in-law, Qiongji, get up! Get up and go to the river to cut water plants. My son can just cut a small bundle, and my wife needs to cut a big one.” You can go home only if you bundle them up.”
Qiongji stood in the water, shivering with cold, crying and singing:
Ah, tsk tsk, how sad I am,
Alas, how sad I am!
The river water is so cold, so cold,
Water plants, I don’t know how to cut them.
Gadan heard this, helped his wife ashore, wiped her tears with his hat, and sang:
Qiongji, don’t cry, Qiongjimo is sad,
Don’t cry, Jonji, don’t cry, Jonji, don’t be sad;
The water is cold. Go ashore and have a rest.
Brother, let me cut it for you.
Qiongji sat on the bank of the river and soon fell asleep. Goddess Gongtang Lhamo turned into a beautiful nun and appeared on the bank of the Lhasa River with two companions. She said happily:
Please listen to it, Qing.
Young Awugadan;
Think about it,
Awugadan youth.
I am not an ordinary woman,
I am the Goddess Gongtang Ram.
Let’s get married, okay?
Can we live together for three years?
If you really can’t get married,
Can we exchange rings?
After hearing this, Gadan’s eyes were filled with anger. While mowing the grass, he replied:
Please listen to it,
Goddess Gongtang Ram;
Please think about it,
Gongtang Ram Goddess!
I have a wife, Jonji,
I cannot marry you;
I have a wife, Jonji,
cannot live with you;
I have a wife, Jonji,
I can’t exchange rings with you.
Gongtang Lhamo became even more unhappy. He pinched Gadan’s nose hard and said, “I’ll wait for you at the Medoquba Festival. I’ll wait for you!” After saying that, he disappeared like smoke.
Like yesterday, they started with Gadan carrying a large bundle and Qiongji carrying a small bundle. When they got home, Qiongji carried a large bundle and Gadan carried a small bundle. The old woman was so happy that she couldn’t beat her daughter-in-law anymore.
The fifteenth day of April in the Tibetan calendar is the Medok Choba Festival at Gongtang Monastery on the south bank of the Lhasa River. The male and female companions who were nearby came to invite them to cross the river to watch the excitement; Gadan remembered the words of Goddess Gongtang Ram and refused to leave.
The old woman said: “Go! Go! There are people who are richer than you, and there are people who are poorer than you; there are people who are older than you, and there are people who are younger than you; there are people who are against you, and there are people who are good to you. Yes. What?”
After listening to his mother’s words, Gaden took his wife Qiongji and took a cowhide boat across the Lhasa River with everyone. Gongtang Lhamo turned into a flower magpie and kept circling over the Lhasa River. The cowhide boat also kept spinning in circles.
Seeing that the people in the boat were about to drown, Awugadan sang:
Please listen to it,
Gongtang Ram Goddess!
Please think about it,
Gongtang Ram Goddess!
If you hate a horse,
Why kill a hundred horses?
If you hate someone,
Why drown a boat full of people?
When the young man sang like this, the magpie flew back to the upper floor of Gongtang Temple. The Lhasa River was calm and the cowhide boats no longer circled.
Not long after, Gongtang Lhamo turned into a black crow again, flying over the Lhasa River and chirping non-stop. A strong wind blew in the air, waves surged on the river, and the cowhide boat was about to capsize. Gadan sang again,
Please listen to it,
Goddess Gongtang Ram;
Please think about it,
Goddess Gongtang Ram;
If you hate a horse
Why kill a hundred horses?
If you hate someone,
Why drown a boat full of people?
After singing, he took off the ring and threw it into the sky. The crow flew to Gongtang Temple with the ring in its mouth. The wind stopped and the waves calmed down on the Lhasa River, and the cowhide boat arrived at Liudong Xianggar Ferry (Liudong Xianggar Ferry: In the east of Lhasa, before the bridge was built, this was where the cowhide boat ferried.). Everyone happily landed ashore and went to the temple fair happily.
Gadan was walking when his head suddenly hurt terribly. He sat on the roadside and said to his wife, “Qiongji, I want to drink water!” Qiongji ran to the river and dipped his belt into some water.
The drops fell into Ga Dan’s mouth, and Ga Dan said intermittently: “Good Qiongji, I… I… left…, the goddess… Gong… Don… Ram, forced me… to do… Her…husband.” After saying that, his soul was taken away by the goddess.
Seeing that her husband had died, Qiongji cried her heart out. She thought: “In this suffering world, besides my husband Gadan, who else can love me and love me?” In a fit of anger, she pulled out a short knife and stabbed it into her chest. Her soul was wandering and she followed her husband into Gongtang Temple.
Gongtang Ram got Gadan’s ring and forced him to marry him. Gadan begged bitterly: “A needle cannot be pointed at both ends, and a person cannot have two hearts. I have a wife Qiongji, and I can’t Marry you.” Gongtang Ram was very angry and punished Gaden to do hard labor in the temple carrying water and chopping firewood.
Qiongji’s soul also entered the temple. Knowing this situation, he begged Gongtang Ram:
Please do it please,
Gongtang Ram Goddess!
Please give me your husband back, okay?
Let me meet him, okay?
If it really doesn’t work,
Can I be a servant?
Gongtang Ram didn’t get Gadan, so he hated Qiongji so much that he gnashed his teeth and turned all his jealousy on Qiongji:
Prick up your ears and listen,
The hateful girl Qiongji
Do you want to take him home? no!
Do you want to meet him? no!
You have to stay here with me,
It can only be used as a fire stick!
In order to see Gadan, Qiongji turned into a poker. Unexpectedly, the cruel Gongtang Ram burned it during the day and at night, and soon the poker was burnt. Qiongji had no choice but to turn into a poker again. It was turned into a broom, Gongtang Ram swept it during the day and at night, and soon it was ruined. In the end, Qiongji became a bucket stone beside the well. Every time Gadan came to carry water, although she could not speak, her tears seeped out from the stone bit by bit.
The old people in Lhasa all say that poaching others and seizing their husbands started with the Goddess Gongtang Ram. Everyone sympathized with Miss Qiongji very much. During the New Year and festivals, they would place prayer flags, scatter tsampa, and light up the curls of pine smoke beside the bucket stone.

Note: About five kilometers away from the eastern suburbs of Lhasa, there is an ancient temple built in the Song Dynasty called “Gongtang Temple”. The temple enshrines a protective goddess named Gongtang Ram. This story about a goddess breaking up a harmonious family and dominating the married woman has been widely circulated among the Tibetan people.
Judging from several of our recorded materials, this legend has three endings. One is that after Gadan died, his wife Qiongji took back his bones and finally resurrected him; the other is that Gadan was forced to marry the goddess, and Qiongji When he came to the temple, he carried water for three years and burned fire for three years, and finally he became a god; the third one was that Qiongji turned into a bucket stone. When we sorted it out, we adopted this ending.
