Appreciation and Analysis of Translation of “Xing Xing, Xing Xing”

“Xing Xing Zhong Xing Xing” is a five-character poem produced by a literati in the Han Dynasty. It is the first in “Nineteen Ancient Poems” and a song of lovesickness and chaos in the turbulent years at the end of the Han Dynasty.

This poem expresses a woman’s deep yearning for her husband who is traveling far away. The content can be divided into two parts: the first six sentences are the first part, recounting the early parting, focusing on the difficulty of meeting Lu Yuan; the last ten sentences are the first part. The second part focuses on portraying the suffering of longing for women and lovesickness. The whole poem has a rigorous structure and distinct levels; the use of bixing makes the image vivid; the language is simple and natural, easy to understand, and naturally shows the psychological characteristics of thinking about women and lovesickness, and has a simple and fresh folk song style.

Anonymous (Two Hans)

Walk and walk again, separate from the king and life.

There are thousands of miles away, each in the end of the world.

The road is obstructed and long, can the meeting be known?

Huma relies on the north wind, and the more the bird’s nest branches south.

The day is far away, and the day of clothing has slowed down.

Floating clouds cover the day, wandering recklessly.

Sijun makes people old, and the years are suddenly too late.

Don’t give up and don’t go back, and work hard to add meals.

Walking, walking and walking have been walking non-stop, just like this and separated from you alive.

Since then, there are thousands of miles between you and me, I am on the other side of the sky and you are on the other side of the sky.

The journey is difficult and far away. How can I know when I can meet?

The horse in the north is attached to the north wind, and the bird’s nest in the south is on the branches to the south.

The longer and longer the separation, the more generous the clothes, the thinner and thinner the person.

The wandering clouds covered the sun, and the wanderers from other countries didn’t want to return it again.

I miss you so much that I feel sick physically and mentally, and you haven’t returned for another year.

I don’t need to talk about these things, I just hope you take care not to catch cold and hunger.

Creative background
This is a poem reflecting the sorrow and hatred of wives, and is one of the “Nineteen Ancient Poems”. There are many opinions about the era background of “Nineteen Ancient Poems”. Yuwen Suoan believes that early Chinese poetry is a reproduction system, and there is no conclusive evidence that “ancient poetry” was earlier than the Jian’an period. Mu Zhai proposed “Nineteen Ancient Poems” and an important part of Jian’an poems. Most of the poems are by Cao Zhi. Li Shan’s commentary on “Selected Works of Zhaoming·Miscellaneous Poems” has clearly explained: “Combined with the ancient poems, I do not know the author.” He believes that it was written in the Eastern Han Dynasty, and this is the mainstream view since the 20th century. People nowadays generally think that it is not a one-time work, and it should be produced in the decades before the Eastern Han Dynasty Xiandi Jianan. As for the specific creation time of “Xing Xing Xing Xing Xing”, it is difficult to verify.
