Description:

“Childhood” is the first part of Gorky’s autobiographical trilogy, which describes the life experience of the protagonist Alyosha from the age of three to ten. After Alyosha lost his father at the age of three, he was brought to his grandfather’s house by his mother and grandmother. This is a typical Russian citizen family. Grandpa is a small dye shop owner and is on the verge of bankruptcy. He is irritable, surly, greedy, and selfish; his two uncles are also rude and selfish, often quarreling and fighting over the family property, and the third generation is also very badly affected.

What Alyosha saw here every day was a disgusting scandal, but he was loved by his grandmother and influenced by the stories told by her grandmother, which had a great influence on his later literary career. Through the experience of Alyosha in his childhood, the novel truly reflects the life and emotions of the Russian low-level citizens at the end of the 19th century.
