The Dutch Maritime Museum was built beside the canal harbor and used to be the arsenal of the Dutch Navy. The four-year-old project is the result of the joint efforts of several architectural firms – Rappange&Partners, who specialize in renovations and remodeling works, and the Belgian architect Laurent Ney, who is responsible for the design of the invisible roof, and Dok architecten in Amsterdam. Some design firms responsible for individual exhibition spaces assisted in the completion. The most notable feature of the new museum is that during the renovation process, the original masonry work of the building was respected and preserved. The symmetrical layout of the New Netherland Maritime Museum keeps the classical style intact. Its structure is a boxy three-storey white building. The exterior of the building faces the water of the harbour, while the interior has a central courtyard. In order to accommodate the growing number of tourists, the central courtyard is covered with a light steel roof. The semi-outdoor space is used as a landmark for people to shuttle between different exhibitions.
The 62-ton sunpanel glass spans the courtyard in the columnar layout and leaves a small gap at the junction of the roof edge for natural ventilation. When night comes, thousands of mini LED lights placed on the ceiling glass illuminate the courtyard, like countless stars.
