In 2009, Shen Xingxing set foot on the land of Phnom Penh by chance and became a truck driver who delivered fake goods to drug dealers. For 397 days, he lived with drug dealers, gamblers, and gangsters. Before that, he never thought that the real world was so bad.
After he witnessed a series of events that seemed like a world away, such as his friend being shot in the head by an extremist and his boss slitting his men’s throats in public, Shen Xingxing decided to flee back to China overnight to surrender and assisted the police in cracking down on the drug trafficking chain that had been entrenched in the mountains for many years. He recorded the people and things he experienced in Phnom Penh in the stories in the book.
